(ID)Entity: Reimagining the Batak Tribe Community through
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory of Development
Settled at Barangay Tanabag in Puerto Prince-
sa (1880) are the Batak people, a group of in- digenous peoples who, for centuries, have combined a hunting-gathering lifestyle with a slash and burn farming method, as well as trad- ing. They strove to supplement their income by harvesting and trading non-timber forest prod- ucts. In the early 1900s, there were around 600 of them. During the 70s, there were almost 400 of them. Now they're down to about 300- they are slowly disappearing. Today, the Batak are threatened by conservation schemes by the government. The small Batak population means young people are forced to marry either a lo- cal of Palawan or someone from another tribe. The people suffer from health issues, mainly malnutrition and diarrhea, and they also have a poor literacy rate—the highest educational attainment of any member of the Batak tribe is still 6th Grade. In this study, the researcher plans a community for the Batak by understand- ing their ecological development.
