3. When was an activity on the similar topic organized by you last: September 15th 2018

4. a) Main theme of the Scientific Activity (Attach separate sheet, if required):

This seminar is intended to create awareness and also to provide a perfect platform for the participants
to upgrade their knowledge with experts from academic institutions and industry and develop a
research vision for Electrical Engineers. Energy is crucial to human sustenance and development. Due to
the increase in the Demand of energy and deficiency in power generation, day by day the gap between
demand and supply of electric energy is widening. Bridging this gap from the supply side is very difficult
and expensive proposition. Also limited energy resources, scarcity of capital and high interest costs for
the addition of new generation capacity are leading to the increased cost of electrical energy in India.
The only viable way to handle this crisis, apart from capacity addition, is the efficient use of available
energy, which is possible only by continuously monitoring and controlling the use of electrical energy.
Hence energy management and audit program is a systematic and scientific process to identify the
potential for improvements in energy efficiency, to recommend the ways with or without financial
investment, to achieve estimated energy saving and energy cost. Energy Audit is the key to a systematic
approach for decision-making in the area of energy management. The primary objective of Energy Audit
is to determine ways to reduce energy consumption per unit of product output or to reduce the
operating costs. Energy Audit provides a "bench-mark" for managing energy in the organization and
also provides the basis for planning a more effective use of energy throughout the organization. It
attempts to balance the total energy inputs with its use, and serves to identify all the energy streams in a
facility. Industrial energy audit is an effective tool in defining and pursuing comprehensive energy
management programme.

5. a) Relevance in the national context (Attach separate sheet, if required):

The primary energy demand in India has grown from about 450 million tons of oil equivalent (toe) in
2000 to about 770 million toe in 2012. This is expected to increase to about 1250 (estimated by
International Energy Agency) to 1500 (estimated in the Integrated Energy Policy Report) million tons in
2030. This increase is driven by a number of factors, the most important of which are increasing incomes
and economic growth which lead to greater demand for energy services such as lighting, cooking, space
cooling, mobility, industrial production, office automation, etc. This growth is also reflective of the current
very low level of energy supply in India: the average annual energy supply in India in 2011 was only 0.6
toe per capita; whereas the global average was 1.88 toe per capita. It may also be noted that no country
in the world has been able to achieve a Human Development Index of 0.9 or more without an annual
energy supply of at least 4 toe per capita. Consequently, there is a large latent demand for energy services
that needs to be fulfilled in order for people to have reasonable incomes and a decent quality of life.
Identifying the sources of energy use, an energy audit seeks to prioritize the energy uses according to the
greatest to least cost effective opportunities for energy savings.

b ) How will the activity help in the promotion of science (Attach separate sheet, if required)

Energy today has become a key factor in deciding the product cost at micro level as well as in dictating
the inflation and the debt burden at the macro level. Energy cost is a significant factor in economic
activity at par with factors of production like capital, land and labour. The imperatives of an energy
shortage situation calls for energy conservation measure, which essentially mean using less energy for
the same level of activity. Energy Audit attempts to balance the total energy inputs with its use and serves
to identify all the energy streams in the systems and quantifies energy usages according to its discrete
function. Energy Audit helps in energy cost optimization, pollution control, safety aspects and suggests
the methods to improve the operating & maintenance practices of the system. It is instrumental in coping
with the situation of variation in energy cost availability, reliability of energy supply, decision on
appropriate energy mix, decision on using improved energy conservation equipment’s. Instrumentation’s
and technology, So this seminar is intended to be conducted in an effective manner and reachable to
target audience only by bringing eminent personality for delivering lecture and conducting hands on
training during field visit, It improves the awareness on energy conservation and improve the energy
utilization through which the knowledge transfer contribute better understanding on Electrical
science.a) Indicate which of the CSIR laboratories/institutions are engaged in the main theme of
