PLAN / ARTISTIC CHOICES

Original Song
Title: 2002

Artist/Band: Anne Marie

Genre: Pop

What is the meaning of the original song?

The song 2002 is talking about memory when she was young. It’s saying about the first love she met when she was a student. So
basically it’s saying about the love which is other pop songs normally do.

Who is the intended audience?

The intended audience of this song is any people who want to listen to pop songs because it doesn’t have any regional
components or specific morals. It is saying about the first love that she had so the intended audience of this song is the people who
like this kind of song.

What instrument/musical tools will be involved in your performance, and who will play them?
I will play the piano. Lulu will sing. We can change the genre by changing rhythm and speed not only changing the instrument. Or
maybe we can play drum if we can learn. We can add the Jazz beat to make the song more sounds like Jazz. We will apply swing
rhythm in the main hook part, and we won’t change the chords. We are going to use the technique calls arpeggio, which is the
technique that plays the chord one by one. And we will use syncopated rhythm on the left hand, to make it more sounds like jazz.

What will your new genre be?

We will change 2002 to Jazz because we thought it will be good to listen in other versions which are fit for lyrics but has a different
mood.

FEEDBACK/REFLECTION

Self-Reflection:
I changed the pop song called “2002” to jazz. It didn’t sound like jazz after we changed, because I only added the jazz drum and a
few notes. I wanted to change the chords, but it took too much time to decide what are we going to do in the final performance.
The most effective thing in my final performance was the drumbeat. We found the jazz drum source that we can use it for free,
and it was the most important component of our final performance. I think the least effective thing about our final performance was
the singing. We were planning to change the pitches of the song, but I think Lulu got nervous during the performance and forgot
about it. But it still helped our performance because most jazz songs have lyrics and voice. The most important and effective
change during our process is that we changed the chords to the melody line. I think if we did it with chords, our final performance
would be sounds like just an original songs. Changing the chords to melody and change the rhythm helped our performance
sounds more like jazz. After I heard lots of different genres of songs, I knew that each genre has its own style. If it is the same
song, it can be showing different expressions depends on the genre. We can express different expressions depending on what
genre are we creating.

Peer Feedback:
Vivian:
● Needs more practice for collaborating.
● It doesn’t feel like jazz.
● More practice for singing.
Daniella:
● The timing of singing doesn’t fit the music.
● It doesn’t feel like jazz.
● Needs more practice.
Expression:
Before we changed the genre, the song just sounds like a common and popular song saying about the first love. By changing the
genre, it sounds more rhythmical and soft. The lyrics didn’t change, but listeners can feel the difference between the original song
and the song that is other genre. So the listeners can feel different expression between two different genres. The mood is different
between the original genre and new genre because we slow down the beat, add the drum sound, and change the rhythm. These
elements changed the mood of the song. Before we change, it was polite and joyful songs, and after we changed, it is still joyful,
but sounds more calm and quiet. It can represent the personal or cultural expression by changing the way to express them and the
way can be changing genres.
