Application Description
Water Quality Monitoring & Control for cooling towers
Cooling towers are used in different industries to cool down processes. They facilitate heat exchange
between air and process water. The functionality of those facilities can suffer from many factors like
calcification, corrosion or bacterial contamination (legionella). Continuous monitoring is crucial.
Cooling tower processes need to be controlled and monitored. The task encompasses monitoring flow
rates, physical-chemical properties, controlling of dosage pumps, and draining to waste while adding
fresh water. Sometimes it is needed to pre-lower conductivity, which facilitates a temporal shift of the
curative treatment. The challenge lies within controlling many different variables at the same time.
Bürkert Solution
Solution based on Type 8619
The customer BWT uses flow meters Type 8011 and 8030 for adding fresh water and releasing waste
water as this measurement principle (paddle wheel) is not affected by water quality variations.
A solenoid valve Type 6213 is used to release water according to the conductivity measurement from
resistive (Type 8220) or inductive transmitters (Type 8228). The dosage pumps (for biocidal shock
treatment) are controlled based on ORP measurement (Type 8220/8223). Type 8619 combines all of
these tasks and measurement variables in one controller. The customer was especially happy about
the Time dosing function that allows the automated dosing at any given date and time and other
particularly suitable functions for cooling tower control.
