Abstract
Esmeralda Corp. is a Peruvian enterprise that looks after the logistics and food sector through the
processing of meat, hydro-biological and agro-industrial products. This enterprise is located in
environmentally sensitive area “Pantanos de Villa”; in the south of Lima, which is a wetland recognized
by the international agreement RAMSAR. Regarding this fact, since 2008, Esmeralda Corp. has begun the
implementation of resource efficiency and the approach of a cleaner production.

The implementation of cleaner technologies has been focused on the complete removal of ozone
depleting substances by replacing Freon refrigerating gases for Ammonia-glycol and by reducing water
pollution through the implementation of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP).

WWTP treats industrial waste waters generated in the processes of different industries established and
categorized into 4 types: hydro-biological(1), meat(2), agro-industrial(3) and domestic(4), with an entry
load to the plant (DBO≈1200ppm, DQO≈1800ppm, AyG≈183ppm), (DBO≈3600ppm, DQO≈5800ppm,
AyG≈753ppm), (DBO≈600ppm, DQO≈1050ppm, AyG≈39ppm) y (DBO≈300ppm, DQO≈550ppm,
AyG≈50ppm), respectively.

By using treatments of: roughing(1)(2)(3)(4) and sedimentation(1)(2)(3)(4), chemical DAF(1), activated

sludge by SBR(1)(2)(3)(4) and MBR ultrafiltration(1)(2)(3)(4) respectively. It converts 500 m3/day of
industrial waste water into irrigation quality water according to the (ECA-Category 3 Peruvian Regulation
with DBO<15ppm, DQO<40ppm, AyG<1ppm), complying with current legislation, it becomes the first
and only plant of its kind in Peru and, as we know, in South America, that uses ultrafiltration in this
sector.

Since the purchase of the first MBR TMR090 (50S) in 2011 for the first tests (March-October), we have
stablished currently 26 MBR TMR140(100S) (1200-1500 l/h filter capacity each one) which together
reach a filter capacity of 700m3/day. With this, a high treatment efficiency is achieved in a small space
and reuse water is obtained under the ECA-category 3 (DBO<7ppm, DQO<30ppm, AyG≈ND,
TURBIDITY<1NTU) that reuses 100 % for the WWTP irrigation and cleaning.

We are implementing a reverse osmosis equipment (100m3/day) to reuse ultrafiltration water (MBR) in
cauldrons, condensers, etc. (equipments that need water with a low salt content). Ultrafiltration water
contains SST=0 mg/l and has a turbidity<1NTU, required parameters for the use of Osmosis.
