Manual: TX Power Fixed; Radio Branch: Powers
Automatic: ATPC enabled (indipendent
of modulation)
ATPC allows to increase and reduce Ptx
automatically when fading occurs.
RTPC
ATPC vs constant Ptx:
- Less power consumption, Zone ACM ATPC reduces Ptx
- higher MTBF,
- reduced interference on other links
ATPC let Ptx unchanged

ATPC increases up to the maximum

In general the threshold Low ATPC = threshold Upshift of

upper modulation; in this way ATPC work before the
downshift.

Hybrid Physical Level Aggregation
Requisite minimum :
• DCN traffic between AGS-20 and ALFO80HD is on a dedicated cable
•Synchronization (SETS, SSM) must be congruent between AGS-20 and ALFO80HD
•Configure on AGS-20 that SSM messages are sent on the aggregated channel
•If Radio Encryption is used, this function must be enabled both AGS-20 and ALFO80HD
•If Hitless-PLA is enabled, it must be activated on both the equipment of the radio link
•MAB isn’t supported for hybrid aggregation
•Set 2.5Gbps LANC of AGS-20 and LAN1 of ALFO80HD (other speed setting have not been tested)

Procedure :
1. Enable HPLA on LAN-1 First in Remote (1) and then in Local (2) ALFOplus80HD
2. In remote AGS-20 create a new aggregation all the ODU are in Port ODU A
3. In local AGS-20 create a new aggregation all the ODU are in Port ODU A

There are 3 status of the Main Clock T0 (PLL):

Free Running = missing synchronism, an Internal Clock provides the synch by itself (PLL).
Holdover = low quality of Synch, trying to recover by a clock stored in a buffer. 91
Locked = normal situation of synchronisation.

When protocol tunneling is enabled, edge switches on the inbound side of the service-provider network
encapsulate Layer 2 protocol packets with a special MAC address and send them across the
service-provider network. Core switches in the network do not process these packets but forward them
as normal packets. You can enable Layer 2 protocol tunneling (by protocol) on the ports that are
connected to the customer in the edge switches of the service-provider network.

Header Compression
Packet Header Compression allows eliminating locally the static fields of the packet header, transmitting
over the radio link proprietary labels (Context Label) in place of these long and repetitive header fields
(as IP/MAC addresses, TAG Ethernet, MPLS labels, etc.) and reconstructing them at the output of the
remote terminal. This allows achieving good gains in terms of throughput in presence of long
communication streams characterized by a great number of packets.

LLF ( Link Loss Forwarding )
"Link Loss Forwarding" is a alarm of malfunction that propagates in the Ethernet link,
used in strategies of redirection packets for alternative connections

2
5

1
Single => at least one of the selected links is in air loss or removed from RLAG
Group => all selected links are in air loss or removed from RLAG
6

In case of radio alarm (demod fail, link id,

etc), the LLF is forwarded ( Enable = both
3 sites; Disable = only remote site) 7

The LLF can be forwarded also as a 8

LAG
“Link Aggregation" allows the L2 (based on MAC hashing) or L3 (based on IP hashing)
aggregation two or more LANs of the same equipment to one logical channel (Port

Port Isolation
Port Isolation allows easy to separation of client traffic at the VLAN edge. It allows
groups of clients to be logically grouped into a single VLAN, but keeps their traffic
fenced off so that snooping and tampering can be avoided.

MAB (Microwave Adaptative Bandwidth) protocol
The Microwave Capacity Management protocol has been developed by SIAE and
CISCO in order to improve the behaviour of the Ethernet ring protection when using the
adaptive code modulation (ACM) on microwave links. The main ring topology
advantages are:
-To offer a protection path in case of equipment failure or radio link unavailability due to
deep fading.
-To increase Ethernet throughput (up to double) from the core toward the border of the
network by distributing on the two ring branches the Ethernet traffic by means of control
plane protocols (G.8032) in order to open the Ethernet loop in a suitable segment.

TEST = Active Manual Operation (Loop, Radio Switch, FM test, Radio BER TEST, etc) 182
Who can generate alarms in a radio link system?
1 ) Propagations of Microwave
- Interference (Set a timeout, active P.M. Prx and turn off radio Transmettitor in both end. Check
the field received and direction of external signal or active Local Link ID)
- Desalign of Antenna (maximize the Voltage on ODU BNC connector, improve XPD in case of
XPIC configuration)
- Obstacle in the 1° Fresnel Zone (tree, tower building, flying objects , Electric power line)
- Particular condition (water, particles, ducts, temperature, pressure, refractivity )
- Using the “Performance Monitoring” Prx, Ptx, BER measuring
2 ) Radio Hardware faulty
- Alarms due of a wrong radio configurations
- Faulty (using P.R.B.S. and Loops, to know which part of the radio is affected)
3 ) External Event
- External power supply failure (No constant 48 Volt, use UPS and battery pack)
- Very High temperature (cover sun) , humidity inside waveguide.
- IDU survival temperature range -10°C to +55° C
- ODU survival temperature range -40°C to +60°C
- ODU Waterproof according to IP65 environmental class

183
Maintenance
Maintenance consists of two stages:
1) Periodical checks = detect correct radio performance without alarm.
For each equipment (every 3/6 months), perform the following operations :
- Save Backup of equipment
- Save Inventory Report (Power Tx and Power Rx)
- Save Signal to Noise value
- Evaluate site condition (installation, secured cable, air conditioner, etc.. )
2) Corrective maintenace = It occurs when there are alarms or abnormal
behavior of equipment.
- Symptoms: Unreacheable, Alarms, Traffic dropped.
- Collection Informations: Performance Monitoring, RMON, Alarms History
- Verify: using Active Manual operations.

184
Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting is performed with :
- Check value of Power Transmettitor, Power Receiver, S/N.
- Disable All Manual Operations.
- Reading Current Alarms and Alarm History and trying to figure out which part of
the equipment is affected, in the following pages there is a description of alarms.
- Check Features Equipment are activated
- Check radio configuration (Line-up procedure).
- Check HW / FW mismatch between Local and Remote site
- Check E1 streams using PRBS and loops. Measure the BER and errors counted.
- Check Ethernet traffic using OAM «Connectivity Fault Manager»
- Restore the preview radio configuration.
- Hot / Cold Restart (turned off > 30 sec)
- Starting from Factory default, reconfigure manually the link.
- Replace with a spare part.
