Bapu Museum is located in the epic of the city of Vijayawada in Krishna District. It was
earlier called as Victoria Museum. Victoria Museum was renovated and the newly constructed
structure was renamed as Bapu Museum. Bapu Museum is a modern museum constructed with the
latest technology and unveils oldest antiquities.

Notably, the Museum has some of the best galleries which include Jaina and Buddha Gallery,
Brahmanical Gallery, Pre & Early Historic Gallery, Epigraphy, Textiles Gallery, Mid-century gallery and
Paintings, Arms and Weapons Gallery, Cannons.

What is inside these Galleries?

Inside Jaina and Buddha Galleries there are plethora of Bonze and stone sculptures. You will
find enough information about Buddhism and Jainism. It is also an abundant source of Jaina and
Buddha’s teachings.

The Brahmanical Gallery contains ancient bronze and stone sculptures. The sculptures
include images of deities manifesting in various forms. The gallery also exhibits some of the ancient
temple structures.

Pre & Early Historic Gallery, this is where human evolution can be conceptualised. The
gallery has exhibits which progress from the pre-historic times, starting from stoneware to the early
history where man remodelled himself into a craftsman. Tools belonging to the paleolithic age are
arranged in an order here in the chronology of their findings, can be seen. Also articles pertaining to
the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Megalithic, Early Medieval times can also be found concealed in the
galleries.

Epigraphy

Epigraphs are the primary source for reconstructing our glorious past. These are the written
documents, written on various materials like stone, copper, wood, shell, cloth, skin and leaves etc.
There are epigraphs of different dynasties starting from Ashokan period to Qutb-Shahi
period and having different scripts like Brahmi, Telugu-Kannada, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Oriya etc.,
of languages like Prakrit, Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Oriya etc., from 3rd C.B.C. to 18th C.A.D.

Scriptures from early Satavahana period along with the numismatics are exhibited in the
galleries here.

Interactive Display cabinets have been placed in the Bapu Museum, to give you more
information about these Epigraphical findings and information, acknowledging the works of those
who made invaluable contributions towards Epigraphy findings.

Textiles Gallery displays one of the finest garments dating back to the 18th century
belonging to the Nizam era, the artistry, skill and precision can be seen preserved here in different
garments.

Mid-century Gallery has a collection of Bidri and Celadon ware – antiquities here belong to
the early 18th century and 19th century. A wide range of display comprising of Bidri ware items like
hookahs, trays, betel boxes, jugs etc., made of Zinc, Copper, Silver and Bidar Clay. Along with them,
Chinaware like aftaba’s, trays, mugs, jugs, plates etc., made of different material like clay, iron and
copper are also placed here.

Coins and paper currencies – coins belonging to as early as 2nd century A.D to the
Satavahana dynasty, Eastern Chalukyans, Turks dynasty, khilji dynasty, Tughlaq, Quutubshahi, Nizam,
Mughals, Asafjahi's etc., can be seen here. Coins belonging to the dynasties and kingdoms can also
be seen here. Early Indian currencies and coins belonging to the early years of the 20th century
issued by the Government of India under British rule and also early currencies issued under Union of
India can be seen here.

Next to the Mid-century gallery there is a good collection of Miniature paintings. Paintings
belonging to the 17-18th century are displayed here. The collection includes Contemporary, Abstract
and Mural paintings.

Arms and Weapons Gallery, these are an integral part of human evolution, from shielding
against wild animals to protecting their territories humans have always been involved in improvising
their arms and weapons. This gallery exhibits ancient weapons to the advancements in it, in modern
times. Ancient weapons made out of stone, it advancement with metal in the form of indigenous
swords namely Khanjar, skanda, chest armour etc. are displayed. A neat description about these
weapons can also be viewed.

Cannons, a 13th century ammunition marvel is also displayed here. You can see Cannon
along with cannon balls its ammunition. It had its application in most of the modern war machinery.
Cannons have been the weapons of destruction in historical wars and was also part of the
indomitable British Regime.
Immersive projection Room

This takes Virtual Reality to a whole new level. This room is a 360-degree projection theatre.
It creates a small world around the viewer’s eliminating the need for a VR headset. Viewers can sit in
the centre of the room and experience the visual treat in 360 degrees.

Here, it takes you back to the Prehistoric era. You don’t just see them but feel them as they
move around you in a whole new transformed arena of Virtual Reality. You can see them doing
activities like work, fight, hunt and many more sitting close next to them. So, with Immersive
projection, you don’t see the history but become a part of it.

Display Cabinets

Amazing display cabinets with state of the art display units to showcase artefacts, statues,
arms and weapons, plaques, textiles and many more. The cabinets are arranged with artefacts, etc.,
in the fore-front and high-quality images related to them in the background, making it all a pleasure
to see.

Antiquities

Antiquities in the museum are organized in sequential order. Antiquities are assimilated and
assorted conferring to their assemblages and organized in the museum.

Mrs. Vani Mohan IAS, Commissioner, Department of Archaeology & Museums, went across the
world visited a lot more museum. She portrayed the thoughts and the ideas she gathered from
across the world class museums. She had captured the enormous changes technically safeguarding
older antiquities. Worked in consonance with the Department of Archaeology & Museums and left
no stone unturned in emanating her ideologies, to bring the world class facilities to the Bapu
museum in Vijayawada. Her role as torch bearer in drawing the attention of the Department and the
Government, in manifesting the need to safeguard and treasure our heritage, resulted in the
Digitalization of the obsolete Museum.
