GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. General

The airframe standard practices chapter contains information on the use and application of
aircraft maintenance and repair processes which are not specifically covered in other
chapters of the Aircraft Maintenance Manual.

It also gives the list of materials required for servicing and maintenance operations.

2. Standards Manual

Information related to the various standards effective for all AIRBUS models are given in a
separate manual called: STANDARDS MANUAL.

The STANDARDS MANUAL contains information about all product/semi-finished

product standards approved by the AIRBUS partners for the AIRBUS programs, as well as
about the proprietary parts and the suppliers qualified for those parts.

Moreover, the STANDARDS MANUAL contains a selection of the basic standards used on
the AIRBUS programs. Standard parts which are not found in the STANDARDS MANUAL
shall not be used without prior approval by AIRBUS INDUSTRIE.

The STANDARDS MANUAL assists the customer with respect to information about the
identification of standard parts and their procurement in co-operation with the AIRBUS
INDUSTRIE spare parts center AIRSPARES.

3. Process and Material Specification Manual

The PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION MANUAL provides basic information on

manufacturing processes and materials which are called up in engineering drawings and
AIRBUS INDUSTRIE documentation.

It is designed to assist operators in producing their own workshop documents necessary to

perform work on in-service AIRBUS aircraft. The quality of such work is the responsability
of the Operator.

20-10-00 - SAFETY PRACTICES - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

General

This section gives the information related to the safety practices of:
- wirelocking (Ref. ATA 20-11)

20-11-11 WIRELOCKING - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

Safetying by Wirelocking
(TASK 20-11-11-911-001-A)

WARNING : USE PROTECTIVE GOOGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR

INSTALL LOCKWIRE, EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE DURING THE
TASK, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT.
LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND .

Reason for the Job

The lockwire is installed to put tension on the wire when the parts become loose.

Job Set-up

A. General wirelockinng rules:

(1) Installation rules:

a. Use locking wire only one time.

b. Lockwire must not be used to lock control cable turnbuckles.
c. When the lockwire is installed, it must notbe damaged by, or cause chaffing
or fatigue. Such chaffing or fatigue can be caused by vibration or an incease
tension applied on the wire to prevent loosening of the locked items.
d. Wirelocking of flexible installed components or assemblies must not have an
effect on the quality of the installation or the locking during operation.
e. Do not use lockwire to prevent unwanted operation of control or switches
for normal, stanby or emergency services which can be necessary during
flight.
f. It is not permitted to use lead seals attached to lockwire.
g. The length of wire between point of attachments must be minimum possible.

(2) Minimum distance between wir and parts in movement:

The minimum clerance between an unsupported length of lockwire and parts in
movement is 15 mm (0.5906 in.)

(3) Wire direction:

a. The line of approach of lockwire must be approximately tangential to parts

that will be locked.
When the lockwire installed, the strand that goes through the hole will
tighten the locked item.
Items with left hand and right hand threads must be identified carefully.
When an anchor lug is used, the wiring must start at the lug, which must be
aligned with the wire. The wire must not cause radial movement of the lug.

b. Not adjacent items:

When wire goes across body of the item to be locked, the angle of approach
of wire to the longitudinal axis of the items must not be less than 45 0 .

B. Additional Pipe Wirelocking Rules:

1. When you connect a pipe to a plug- in union, lock the pipe swivel nut to
the component and not to the plug-in union.
2. You can lock the adjacent plug-in unions or swivel nuts together.
3. Do not use the same lockwire to lock more than one plug-in unions or
swivel nuts.

C. Wirelocking Methods:

1. Double Wire Method:

The recommended is the “double twist method”.

The maximum distance between fastener is 100 mm ( 3.94 in.)
If the distance is more than100 mm ( 3.94 in.):

- Use one more attachment point.

- The maximum length of lockwire is 600 mm (23.62 in.)
You can lock a maximum of 3 items together.

2. Single wire method:

Use only the single wire method only when specified in the related task.
The maximum length of lockwire is 600 mm (23.62 in.)

D. Precautions before wirelocking:

1. Make sure that all lockwire holes are drilled.

2. Make sure that the assembly was torqued to the requirements of the related task.

PROCEDURE :

A. Double wirelocking:

1. Put the lockwire into the hole of the fastener.

NOTE: There must be same length of lockwire on each side of the fastener.

2. Bend one lockwire end around the fastener head (1) to the fastener head (2).
3. Bend this lockwire end around the other lockwire end.
4. Use –PLIERS-TWISTING, SPECIAL to twist the lockwire clockwise at a maximum
angle of 600 .

- Do not put too much tension on the wire.

- To prevent damage on the lockwire during this step, refer to the table that
follows:

Diameter of lockwire Number of twist (for 10 mm) (0.39 in.)

0 mm to 0.5 mm 4-7
0.5 to 1.25 mm 3-5
1.25mm to 2.0 mm 2-4
More than 2.0 mm 2-3

Keep the lockwire tight during the twisting. Until twisting part become very near to
the hole in the next unit.

5. Pull the lockwire end through the fastener head (2) when the twisted part is near it
(less than 3mm).
For wire locking of 3 nuts or bolt heads, twist the lockwire in one direction between
first two items. Then twist it in the opposite direction between the second and third
items.

NOTE: The direction of the wrap and twist strand must be such that the loop
around the parts comes below the strands that go out of the hole. Thus the
loop will stay down and will not become loose.

6. Pull the other lockwire end around the fastener head (2).
7. Twist the strand in the direction that will cause the lower lockwire to always be
pulled down.
The length of the twisted part (pigtail) must be between 10 mm minimum and 15
mm maximum.
8. If necessary cut and discard the unwanted length of lockwire.

- You must collect the cut-off material to prevent damage to the aircraft.

20-16-00 - CIRCUIT BREAKERS - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

Circuit Breakers Safety Practices
TASK 20-16-00-912-001-A

Procedure

A. Circuit Breakers Safety Practices

It is necessary to safety an open circuit breaker with safety clips (PN ABS0772 or
equivalent) during:

- Operation for a not activated optional system or a de-activated system because of

MMEL requirements.
- Maintenance when there is work on an electrically controlled or supplied system.

NOTE : The manufacturer recommends safety clips PN ABS0772 but the operator can use
equivalents that obey the requirements given in this document.

It is important to use safety clips that:

- are easy to install and remove
- do not cause damage to the circuit breaker or circuit breaker panel.

It is always better to use plastic safety clips because they prevent the risk of
accidental short circuits (if they fall in an electrical panel for example).

(1) Operation

During aircraft operation, it can be necessary to prevent the operation of an

electrical system for a:
- a not activated optional system with wiring provision
- a system that is deactivated because of MMEL requirements

(a) Not activated optional system

To prevent the accidental energization of such systems:

1. It is safety practice to install white color safety clips on the related circuit
breakers
2. It is recommended to secure the safety clips with stainless steel lockwire

(b) Deactivated system

To do the deactivation of such systems:

1. It is safety practice to install red color safety clips on the related circuit
breakers.

Course

2. It is recommended to secure the safety clips with stainless steel lockwir. e

(2) Maintenance

(a) There is a risk of injury and damage to equipment and/or the aircraft if persons
do work on electrically energized equipment or systems.

(b) Before maintenance work starts on an electrical equipment or system, it is safety

practice to identify, open, safety and tag the circuit breakers related to the
equipment or system(s). This prevents the supply of electrical power to the
equipment/system(s) and the risk of:

- electrical shocks that can occur when there is contact with energized
wiring connections, terminals, etc.

- short circuits that can occur when metal tools or parts make accidental
contact between energized wiring, terminals, contacts, etc.

(c) To make sure that an open circuit breaker remains open,

(1) It is safety practice to install red color safety clips on the related circuit breaker.
(2) It is recommended to secure the safety clips with stainless steel lock wire.
(3) It is recommended to install a safety tag on the related circuit breakers to inform
maintenance staff of “maintenance operation in progress.”

(d) When these safety clips are installed, it must be possible to see the complete
circuit breaker panel and all the placards.

(3) Tightening torque for circuit breakers

(a) Make sure that you apply the correct tightening torque when you attach/
connect a circuit breaker.

20-21-00- STANDARD TORQUES - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

GENERAL

This section gives the tightening torques for:

- Standard threaded fasteners,
- pipes unions (not for oxygen),
- Flight control threaded fasteners,
- Oxygen unions,
- Electrical component fasteners.

A. TIGHTENING TORQUES FOR STANDARD THREADED FASTENERS

MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

Tightening Torques for Standard Threaded Fasteners

(TASK 20-21-11-911-001-A)

Reason for the Job

This procedure gives the different tightening torques applicable to the standard
screw heads and nuts.
The specific applicable torques is given in the maintenance procedure.

A. Standard Threaded Fasteners-General

(1) The threaded fasteners are identified with a standard number written on the
head (example: ABS, AN, ASNA, NAS, ASN, NSA, MS). They are installed in
standard conditions and lubricated.

(2) Before you apply a tightening torque to a fastener, make sure that you know its
correct part number. To find the correct part number of a fastener (screw,
washer, nut), refer to the installation figure of the IPC.

NOTE: It is necessary to know the fastener standard and diameter to know the
correct tightening torque.

(3) The tightening torques of the TAPERLOK, HI-LOK, and HI-LITE screws are
specified in the given procedures (Ref. SRM 514900).

(4) The torque values of the nuts and the screws are given with their initial
lubricants.

(5) These torque values are available for the different screw /nut diameters:
- The minimum value
- The nominal value
- The maximum value.

Course

(6) Make sure that you get the correct part mating before you apply the maximum
torque value.

B. Used Fasteners

(1) Before you use threaded fasteners again, Make sure that:

- there is no deterioration of the thread of the screw and of the nut, of the
mating surface of the nut and of the recess of the screw.
- the protection of the screw and nut is not damaged.

NOTE: If the protection is damaged, corrosion or seizure can occur.

The condition of the standard lubricant is correct. Apply the initial lubricant again if
necessary.

NOTE: The deterioration of the lubricant decreases the preload values, and can:

- Cause damage to the mating surfaces.

- Decrease the torque for self-locking nuts.
- The screw and nuts are serviceable (get approval from your quality
department or a qualified mechanic)

(2) Do not use aluminum, titanium and inconel nuts again.

(3) Do not use self sealing nuts again.
(4) Self-locking nuts (this includes castellated nuts with a nylon ring)
- Airbus does not recommended that you can use a self-locking nut again.
- If you use a self-locking nut again make sure that the breakaway torque
value is more than the minimum breakaway torque value.

C. Tightening - Tools:

1. GENERAL

(a) Before you use a tightening tool, make sure that the calibration of this tool is correct.

(b) Make sure that the torque is applied correctly.

You can apply unwanted torsion or flexion to the component if:

- The position of the wrench (or the screw driver) is incorrect.

- You apply the tightening torque incorrectly: this can change the tightening torque
and, thus, the preload.

2. Torque wrenches

a. Torque wrench range

For a given torque value, we recommend that you use a torque wrench that have
a value in the range of 30 % to 80 % of the full range.

NOTE : Example for a torque wrench of maximum 10 m daN

- Torque wrench range from 2 m daN to10 m daN
- Recommended range from 3 mdaN to 8 mdaN
- You can feel the force increase while you apply the torque

b. Torque wrench hold

The torque wrench axes must be perpendicular to the fastener axis.
Put your hand on the handle and pull it along the axis.
Apply the torque value gradually and perpendicularly to the wrench.
Stop the movement when the wrench releases ( or on the signal)
Do not use a torque wrench to loosen a fastener

3. Torque wrench adopter

a. When you use an adopter

- The value shown on the dial of the torque wrench is not applied value
- Make sure that wrench length is more than adapter
- Make sure that the torque wrench and adopter are aligned

NOTE: Airbus recommends to have the torque wrench and adapter aligned.

b. Torque value correction applicable when the torque wrench and adopter are
aligned.
To get the torque wrench dial reading value T2, use this formula

T1 x A
T2 = --------
A+B

T1: Value that you must apply on the nut.

A: Length of the torque wrench.
B: Length of the adaptor.
T2: Torque wrench dial reading.

c. Procedure applicable when the torque wrench and adopter are not aligned

1. Make sure the length between handle application point and the bolt axis

led is broken or if more than 25 % of the strands are damaged (less than
75 % not damaged).

NOTE: Because it is not possible to know with precision the number of

damaged strands when a bonding lead is damaged: 25 % is equal
to ¼ of the cross section.

(1) For bonding leads installed on cargo doors

a. During the inspection, it is recommended to replace all bonding leads
that are broken or if more than 25 % of the strands are damaged (less
than 75 % not damaged).

NOTE: Because it is not possible to know with precision the number of

damaged strands when a bonding lead is damaged: 25 % is equal
to ¼ of the cross section.
b. If the operator can not replace all the bonding leads before the
scheduled aircraft release:

1. Measure the maximum permitted resistance value between the

attachments of the damaged bonding leads.

- If the measured resistance value is less than the table resistance

value, you can replace this bonding lead at the subsequent
maintenance activity.
- If the measured resistance value is more than the table resistance
value, and if there are no other parallel leads, replace the damaged
bonding lead.

NOTE: For the bonding leads installed on the FWD and AFT cargo door
piano hinges, we recommended that you remove the damaged
bonding lead without replacement.

(2) For bonding leads installed on :

- The flaps
- The flaps track fairings
- The slats
- The spoilers
- The ailerons
- The nose landing gear doors
- The main landing gear doors
- The access doors

20-31-00 LIST OF MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR AIRCRAFT SERVICE AND

MAINTENANCE - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
GENERAL

WARNING: CONSUMABLE MATERIALS ARE USED IN ALL AREAS OF THE AIRCRAFT

BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK WITH CONSUMABLE MATERIALS
OBEY THE APPLICABLE PROCEDURES, PRECAUTIONS,
RECOMMENDATIONS,WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS:

- WHEN YOU USE OR DO WORK WITH THESE MATERIALS

- FOR THE STORAGE OF THESE MATERIALS
- WHEN YOU DISCARD THESE MATERIALS.
CONSUMABLE MATERIALS CAN CAUSE INJURY OR ILLNESS IF YOU DO NOT
USE THEM CORRECTLY

WARNING: BEFORE YOU USE A CONSUMABLE MATERIAL, YOU MUST KNOW ALL OF THE
APPLICABLE PRECAUTIONS GIVEN IN THE MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET.
READ THESAFETY DATA SHEET FROM THE MANUFACTURER OR SUPPLIER OF
THE MATERIAL AND OBEY THE RECOMMENDED PRECAUTIONS..

CAUTION: WHEN YOU DO A MAINTENANCE TASK THAT USES COMMON GREASE, OBEY
THESE PRECAUTIONS:

- IF POSSIBLE, USE ONLY GREASES OF THE SAME SPECIFICATION TYPE (IT

IS PERMITTED TO USE DIFFERENT BRANDS IF THE SPECIFICATION TYPE
IS THE SAME).
WE SPECIALLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT MIX GREASES THAT
HAVE CLAY THICKENERS WITH GREASES THAT HAVE LITHIUM
THICKENERS. SUCH A MIXTURE CAN CHANGE THE LUBRICATION
PROPERTIES OF THE GREASE.

- IF YOU CANNOT OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS AND YOU USE GREASES OF

DIFFERENT TYPES (SPECIALLY THOSE WITH CLAY THICKENERS AND
LITHIUM THICKENERS), DECREASE THE SERVICING INTERVALS (BY HALF,
FOR EXAMPLE) SPECIFIED IN THE MAINTENANCE PLANNING DOCUMENT.
DO THIS FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE OR FOUR SERVICES (REFER TO
YOUR IN-SERVICE DATA TO FIND THE NUMBER OF SERVICES BEST
ADAPTED TO YOUR AIRCRAFT).

The list of consumable material is given in the Consumble Material List (CML).
For some applications in the AMM procedures, there can be alternative materials. These
materials have the same item number as the basic mterial but with the suffix letter (A,B,C
etc.). Example : 06-001A, 06-001B, & 06-001C are alternative of 06-001.

You can use one of the alternative materials if there is an asterikafter the basic item number
called up in the procedure (e.g. 06-001*). If the procedure calls up basic material without
an asterik or a specific material with a suffix letter, then you must use that specific material
only.

From the October, 2011 revision of the CML, the materials are organized by “ Application” .
Refer to CML introduction for more information. The AMM usually give the CML item
number, except for new materials referenced by anApplication code.
In AirN@v/ Maintenance there is a hyperlink between the material identification given in
the AMM and CML available in the AirNav Associated Data.

NOTE: The list of all approved oil brand names for APU servicing and maintenance is
given in AMM 20-33-00.

The list of all approved oil brand names for IDG servicing and maintenance is
given in AMM 20-34-00.

The list of materials specific to engine is given in AMM 70-30-00.

NOTE: All AMM tasks that use one or more consumable material (s) have this warning at
top of the task.

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS, OBEY THE

MATERIAL MANUFACTURER , S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL
REGULATIONS.

The AMM does not give specific Warnings for consumable materials because the related
precautions are given in the applicabel Material Safety Data Sheet. For more information
about Material Safety Data Sheet, refer to the CML introduction.
