Topic Proposal: Cardiology

I have always had a strong interest in science. What interested my specifically was the idea of
human anatomy. This led me to pursue my passion of Cardiology. Through my independent study this
year, I would like to focus on the topic of Cardiology in order to gain an understanding behind the tasks
and responsibilities of a Cardiologist.

Ever since I was a child, I was always fascinated by biology. While other kids would want to play
to the park or swim in the pool, I would always want to take a hike in a forest, or visit the zoo. The way
living organisms operated and the different functions within their bodies was something that stood out to
me. Because of this, I would always be researching the different body systems or the way certain organs
function. Soon, my interest in science led me to earn high grades throughout middle school science
courses. During freshman year, I was especially intrigued at the information I learned in Pre-AP Biology.
Because of my interest in that course, I started to believe that the medical field was where my future
occupation may be in. The success I had in Pre-AP Biology prompted me to enroll in AP Biology.
Although this course was more difficult, my passion for science pushed me through and led to success
within the course, as well as on the AP exam. After finalizing that my future career path laid on the
medical route, I signed up to take other science courses, such as AP Chemistry and AP Physics. My
interest in the medical field also gave me the opportunity to shadow many doctors and observe their daily
routines. This experience allowed me to gain insight on the medical field, and helped to solidify the idea
that Cardiology was the profession for me. As I was particularly enticed about the cardiovascular system,
the fact that heart problems are the number one cause of death in the United States further motivated me
to select the specific field of Cardiology. I then became fixated on a goal, which is to make a change
through my profession.

According to the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator, I am a protagonist. A protagonist is

known as someone who is a natural-born leader, who is full of passion and charisma. While they make up
around two percent of the population, they can be seen as people who reach out and inspire others to do
good. With natural confidence, they enjoy their work and complete it with pride and joy. I believe that I
strongly related to these traits, as I incorporate them into my daily life. Using my leadership skills, I am
able to take charge under various circumstances, whether it may be the varsity tennis team or as the
president of a club. My everyday actions are influenced by my passion, which is to make a change. No
matter how important an assignment is, I put a hundred percent effort into all of them. As a member of
NHS and various other charitable organizations, my 150 plus volunteer hours go on to show my
motivation for inspiring a positive change in others. Moreover, the confidence I have in myself motivates
me to achieve my goals, which include one day becoming a Cardiologist. Hopefully, when I accomplish
this goal I will be able to carry out my job with pride and joy. In order to reach out to the public,
especially as a doctor, having the necessary skills such as communication and professionalism are critical.
Having acquired these traits through my extracurricular activities such as earning a job and organizing
fundraisers, I hope to further develop through the program of ISM. Overall, the different characteristics
and character traits I have gained over time has allowed me to start a journey into the medical field. I
hope that by developing these skills, I will be able to become a successful Cardiologist.
