As I approached the time for this interview, like the last time, I got more nervous.
Although I had a little more confidence due to the fact that I had already conducted another
interview, what had me stressed was that this time, it was a face-to-face interview. Again, in
order to reduce stress levels, and be more prepared, I practiced with my friends and family. As I
practiced last time, I tried to incorporate some diversity into my practice habits, as I could expect
anything from Dr. Shafiq. As 1:15 came closer and closer, I headed down to Irving, at
Starbucks. Our conversation was very interesting and unique, and was something that actively
was engaging for me, as I was able to learn numerous things that I had not known before. This
interview proved to be very helpful for me as an aspiring Cardiologist.

My main motive throughout the interview, was to find out Dr. Shafiq’s motivation behind
his success in the field of Cardiology, and to use that information to judge whether he would be
a suitable mentor for me. In order for me to grow as a student under Dr. Shafiq, I attempted to
judge whether Dr. Shafiq was similar to me based on my interests, as then I could relate to him
better, and would lead to a productive learning environment for me. Also, I needed to make sure
that Dr. Shafiq had a flexible schedule in order for me to be able to meet with him every week.
As the interview went on, I went on to learn that Dr. Shafiq provided me with some outstanding
tips and informative advice and information. I was also able to come to the conclusion that Dr.
Shafiq was a man who was very generous, kind, and supportive. He was an enthusiastic
individual who was determined to help me grow under his guidance. There were no problems I
had with him based on our first meeting, as he seemed very nice, and was available to meet
every week. His office was also close to where I live, which further helped me to determine
whether he would be a suitable mentor for me or not.

Moreover, the content within the interview itself proved to be very impactful for a young
student such as myself. Many of the details and major advice provided by Dr. Shafiq stood out
to me as a high school student, looking for my future career path. One piece of advice that Dr.
Shafiq provided me with towards the end of our conversation was that I needed to use the time I
had in high school to really think about what profession I would end up in. He told me that it was
very important to carefully formulate your decision, and not to rush a major choice in your life.
Rather, using the time you have in high school to finally choose a profession based on your
interests. He also mentioned that as a child he never expected that he would be a Cardiologist.
This was one of the main highlights that I took away from our conversation. Along with this, the
career related specific questions I asked Dr. Shafiq, proved that he was very knowledgeable in
his field. He was able to describe his job with a passion that was very interesting to me. His
motivation to continue to succeed in Cardiology was something that made me realize that Dr.
Shafiq would be a suitable mentor for me. The advice Dr. Shafiq was able to give me about
being careful about your future, influenced me. My deeper motivation to wanting to be a
Cardiologist, will always be the effect I can make on people’s lives, and walking away knowing
that I changed someone’s life.

During my conversation with Dr. Shafiq, there were many surprising and unexpected
details that I learned about, the most shocking being the overall development of the profession
of Cardiology. I realized that the field of Cardiology has developed a lot, however listening to
this from a Cardiologist puts a lot of emphasis on this. Also, the effort placed by Cardiologists in
order to raise awareness about the problem of heart disease was something that repeated as a
theme throughout my conversation with not only Dr. Shafiq, but the other Cardiologists I have
spoken with as well. In the end, my conversation with Dr. Shafiq was something that motivated
me further to become a Cardiologist. The new opportunities that are constantly showing up in
Cardiology is something that makes the profession all the more attractive. The growth of the
field of Cardiology is very interesting, and made me want to be a significant part in the change
of modern day Cardiology as this profession is still not done growing. My interview with Dr.
Shafiq has only motivated me further to achieve my goal of becoming a Cardiologist, and
making my mark through my profession.

Overall, the information I gained in my conversation with Dr. Shafiq, has had the
potential to have a lasting impact on me as I may apply this knowledge in the future. Having
prepared yourself for entering the workforce by gaining experience can never hurt you, which is
another detail I picked up from my interview. My interview with Dr. Shafiq has only created more
questions that I hope to ask other professionals. In order to continue my research in the field of
Cardiology, I hope to speak with other Cardiologists, who can only help me gain real world
experience. The knowledge I was able to gain from Dr. Jindal will definitely prove helpful to me
in the long run, and has only motivated me further. In the end, Dr. Shafiq’s expertise within the
field of Cardiology has attracted me to him as a suitable option for a mentor, and I hope to be
able to finalize my decision in the near future.
