Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This activity represents all three of the stages of UDL. The first stage of
UDL, engagement, is shown when the students collaborate together to determine which figure is shown in
the picture and what they accomplished. If the students were not talking and discussing together there would
be limited opportunities for collaboration. The second stage of UDL, representation, is shown when the
students clarify the vocabulary within the presentation (names of the figures). The final stage of UDL is used
when they build fluencies by using multiple ways to understand the concepts. All of these enhance the
student learning by allowing them to work together, understand the information in a fun and unique way and
by providing multiple ways to understand the information including a presentation, group discussion, and a
created text.

Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will ask the students to get in groups of 3 or 4 and watch the
presentation. From there the students will work together to guess each important Georgia figure and what
they accomplished. After the students have gone through the PowerPoint we will come back together as a
group to discuss what they learned. The teacher will go through each figure and expand on the details about
them. The students will listen as a group and ask questions when needed. Those who are understanding the
topic will be able to start writing about them on Microsoft Word and those who need to be re taught will
watch videos about each person while sitting with the teacher so they can ask questions. Once they are
beginning to understand they can also move onto writing about the figures.
Afterwards the feedback will be given based off a rubric of grammar and how accurate the facts are. If the
facts are inaccurate they will receive a low grade, however, if they are accurate they will receive a high grade.
If students need a differentiated way of completing the assignment they will be able to speak out their
written portion or draw a picture demonstrating the facts that they learned. This helps students who have
fine motor disabilities, and students who have speaking disabilities. From this assignment the students will
gain a vast knowledge either way they go about completing it. Those who are able to complete the
assignment by using Microsoft Word will also gain a great knowledge in how to use that productivity tool.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea I feel that the activity created will advance student
learning through understanding how to use Microsoft Word and also understanding how to use the slideshow
function of Microsoft PowerPoint. Not only do students understand those functions but they are also learning
about the important figure that shaped Georgia and what they accomplished. This was designed as a
introductory activity and in order to further their knowledge, students will be asked to write a short text
about them and then later on will complete a matching game with their name to what they accomplished.
