Self-Awareness

He that would govern others must first master himself

Self
“The sum total of who a person is; a person’s central
inner force”.

“Self is that inner force, common to all human beings

and yet unique in each, which is the deep source of
growth”
Components of Self
• The Material Self: All the tangible and physical
elements that reflects who we are (Clothing, houses,
cars).

• The Social Self: It reflected through our interaction

with others (Social networking, group affiliations)

• The Spiritual Self: It consists of our inner thoughts,

beliefs and morality (religious Practices)
Dimensions of the Self

Self-Concept: Self-concept is the image you have of

who you are.

“one’s self identity, a basic schema consisting

of an organized collection of beliefs and
attitudes about oneself”

–It is a person’s subjective description of who the person

thinks he or she is.
–Self concept can be viewed as the labels we consistently
use to describe ourselves to others.
Our self is reflected in

• Our attitudes; learned predisposition to respond to a

person, object or idea in a favourable or unfavourable way.
• Our Beliefs; the way in which we structure our
understanding of reality, what is true and what is false.
• Our Values; enduring concepts of good and bad, right and
wrong.
How our Self Concept Develops?
We learn who we are through four basic means,
1. Our interactions with other individuals
2. Our association with groups
3. Roles we assume and
4. Our own labels.

It can be changed overtime

What is self awareness?
Self-awareness is our knowledge of our self; the extent to which
we know who we are.

It refers to “the conscious understanding of your thoughts,

feelings, actions and interpersonal connections”.

Self awareness is a way for us to explore our individual

personalities, value systems, beliefs, natural inclinations, and
tendencies.

Enigma of Self-Awareness
• Seeking self knowledge is a prerequisite for personal
growth, when you don't know yourself you can't capitalize
fully on your strengths or minimize your weaknesses."

• However, we avoid seeking information about ourselves

because it may make us feel inferior

• A useful way of looking at self-awareness is with the

Johari Window
The Johari Window
(Joseph Luft & Harry Ingham)
Our Four Selves
Johari Window

1. The Open Self represents all the information, behaviors,

attitudes, feeling, desires, motivations and ideas that you
and others know.
Communication depends on the degree to which you open
yourself to others and to yourself.
2. The blind Self represents all the things about
yourself that others know but of which you are
ignorant.

3.The hidden self: information known only to self; and

4.The unknown self: information known to neither self

nor others.
Developing self-awareness
Developing self-awareness involves developing an understanding of
one’s
 emotional intelligence,
 values,
 learning style,
 attitude toward change, and
 Ability for specific career fields
• Natural academic ability (athletics, mathematics, English, etc.)
• Personality traits (introvert, extrovert, sensitive, judgmental, etc.)
• Religious beliefs
• Political viewpoints
• Being aware creates an opportunity to make changes in one’s
behavior and beliefs

• While developing self-awareness, personal thoughts and

interpretation will begin to change that automatically make
changes in emotional experiences.

• Becoming self-aware helps in taking control of your life

• It is a crucial step to identify your passion / personal vision

that ultimately leads you toward the life of your choice.

• Self-awareness leads to self-discovery

How to Increase Self Awareness?
• ask yourself about yourself,
• listen to others,
• actively seek information about yourself,
• see your different selves, and
• Pay attention to what is going on in your life inwardly and
outwardly
• Accept the idea that nothing is wrong with being different from
others
• Spend time with yourself – ME time
• Deep Breathing
• Meditation
Self-Disclosure
• Self-disclosure is revealing information about yourself to
others, information that is normally hidden.
• Self-disclosure is influenced by a variety of factors:
• who you are,
• your culture,
• your gender,
• your listeners, and your topic.
Among the rewards of self-disclosure are
• self-knowledge,
• ability to cope,
• communication effectiveness,
• meaningfulness of relationships.

Among the dangers are personal risks,

• relational risks, professional risks, and
• the fact that communication is irreversible; once
something is said, you can't take it back.
If you do not believe in self –
disclosure then remember this …
Now to begin!

We encourage you to practice and apply the skills

discussed in this session to everyday situations – jobs,
families, friendships, etc.
With careful practice, following the guidelines shown here
will soon become second nature.

this ?

23
Do you think that Personal SWOT Analysis is
possible or it is at organizational level ?

24
Why SWOT Analysis?
