space.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
We wanted to create a design that would possibly become a potential model for
future plans in the community. The project proposal also aims to provide the students
with knowledge prior to creating suitable plans for urban spaces, understand how its
planning can affect the users, and be guided with appropriate information regarding the
importance of having proper open spaces especially in the crowded and inefficient plan
use in various areas of Manila.
Community-wise, the project aims to develop the street to further improve the
market in the area and to alleviate the foot traffic that often leads to accidents. We
wanted the end-users to have an experience that would showcase how the old design
would coincide with contemporary and modern concepts without having to sacrifice
the integrity of Intramuros’ aesthetic.
PROPOSED URBAN
DESIGN CONCEPT

The idea was to turn an inefficient street off

Intramuros into a vibrant streetscape by integrating
new concepts into the street.
We wanted to incorporate the idea of using
“urban rooms” that breaks down the area into smaller
spaces with a sense of separation whilst keeping a
coherent atmosphere all throughout the street.

Intramuros
PROJECT DEFINITION

♦ The use of the concept “urban rooms” became our defining

characteristic in the proposal. Our focus revolved around high
consideration of pedestrian walkways that are functional as well
as aesthetic. Functional since it promotes social interaction, and
Aesthetic since it creates a new perspective to the end-users.
♦ We see our design as addressing solutions in a long term basis.
What sets us apart the most from other designs is how we
made sure that our designs would not compromise the
Architectural integrity of Intramuros whilst improving the
overall environment.
COMPARING
“OLD” TO
The most important things that
differentiates our design from the
old one would have to be the
“NEW”
design’s capability in addressing
the vicinity’s problem with long
term solutions.

The Proposed Design will

have the ability to cope with
Classical and/or Modern
Architecture and it will not
intervene with the vintage
characteristic and aesthetic of
the place.
