Chapter 1

1.1. Background of the Study

The country is having a big problem about our environment. As each day passes, the
waste are expanding. Most people never cared about where to put their trash. Also,
they realized that garbage is not just a simple issue here in the Philippines. The
University of the East Basic Education Departement Manila thought of a way on how to
reduced plastic wastes in the campus. They implemented to use eco bags. The
researchers got the survey which was conducted by the grade 7 students of the
University of the East- Manila. The waste mismanagement has a serious environmental
consequences: local flooding, air pollution, water pollution, global warming, ground and
surface water contamination, exposure to toxins, and spread of diseases. Some of this
problem are most of the students in the school are leaving their trash wherever they
want which is not right, maybe they think that there are janitors who will clean their
trash, but they don’t know how to clean their own. Especially the wrappers or the pieces
of papers they should not waste. They must have initiative in doing such things.
Sometimes when people pass in a street, and they can see a garbage along the street.
To be more specific, some of the students are passing along Gastambide street to enter
the school. Maybe people have noticed how dirty the street is, whether if it is in the
morning, afternoon or evening but the initial thought is just because there are people
who don’t care about the place or environment. There are people in the street who
doesn’t put their trash in a simple garbage bag or in a trash bin. Everywhere you go
there are trashes in your way. According to the research, garbage issues is a big
problem, In the year 2008, most people never cared about where to put their trash.
Others don’t throw in proper trash bins, others just drop the waste on the street and
they contribute to garbage problems in the Philippines. Waste Management
Commission shows that there are 677 open dumpsites, 343 controlled dumps, and 21
landfills in the country. An additional 307 dump sites are subject for closure or
rehabilitation plans but without definite schedules for enforcement. About 215
additional landfills are being proposed to be set up nationwide. The more waste in the
Philippines causes the increase in global warming, high temperature and less oxygen
because of the air pollution. The ocean found 1,355,236 items of trash and people,
nearly 400,000 volunteers, gather from around the world just to help in the Philippines.
These can cause poison and toxic in the ocean and you may see these trashes in some
body of water like the Manila Bay. In 2006, garbage increase 76 percent of the garbage
was made of plastic and 51 percent was plastic bags at Manila Bay. In September 27,
2009, Ondoy's flood caused millions of water hit around in the Philippines then the
Ondoy's cyclone also left behind 10 times the usual garbage accumulated in Metro
Manila. The trash collected by Ondoy blocked some sewages in the streets that caused
poor water drainage, mud and more water. (Christopher Ng, 2011) Change the attitudes
of every individual to have an initiative to put the trash in a trash bin. The causes of
waste mismanagement are the Ignorance, Laziness and Greed. Ignorance, People are
unaware of consequence of their unwise acts. They do not think what will be the effect
of their every action concerning Mother Nature. This is related to selfishness for they
don’t think about how it will affect others. Laziness, People aren’t able to give time in
finding bins for their garbage. They just throw their waste /trashes in what place they
want. Greed, instead of keeping or trading excess things to maximize uses, they bought
new one for only like not a need. This causes also has effect. First the Health, Lung
disease, heart problem, skin irritation, problem/ abnormality in breathing and more are
examples of diseases due to pollution caused by improper waste disposal. Coastal and
Marine Environment, Dangerous wastes if dumped into the environment reaches the
ground and the ground water where some communities get their drinking water. In
marine environment, improper waste disposal kills aquatic animal due to excretion of
chemicals. The third effect of waste mismanagement is Climate. As some waste
decomposes, it releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere- trapping of heat
affecting weather condition. Air Pollution, It was caused open burning of waste (e.g.
rubber and plastic). It produced methane gas which is one of the main components of
landfill gas and much more effective than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. The last
one is Soil Contamination. It is causes by presence of man-made chemicals (e.g.
petroleum hydrocarbons, solvents, pesticides, lead and etc.), leaching of watses from
landfills or incorrect disposal of industrial waste. It is observable by the softness of the
ground, having smelly soil vapor and other alteration in the natural soil environment. It
was difficult to clean up after Ondoy because there was garbage everywhere and not
only that but there are equipments, appliances and furnitures too. These things became
useless because they were submerged in water and are no longer working. This is
something really scary because we don’t know what would happen to our country in the
future. With simple things like cleaning up garbage can’t be done, what more for bigger
things. Don’t expect that the Filipinos would progress. That’s why it’s a scary thing
because you’ll never know what is going to happen in the next years to come. For the
youth, there is still a chance to improve the garbage problem by simply starting with the
neighborhood first. They’re sure it would go a long way from there. The researchers are
trying to help the environment to be clean and to change the attitudes of every
individual to have an initiative to put the trash in a trash bin.

1.2. Statement of the Problem/Objectives

The study generally aims to create a trashbin that can help in waste management inside
the school.
1.) Does the trash bin affects the students manage their waste?
2.) Does the trash can helpful to reduce the trash in the surroundings?
3.) Is there a significant change in waste problem inside the school or perceived by the
teachers?

1.3. Significance of the Study

The result of this Investigatory Project aims to help the following:

• Students will be motivated in throwing trash, resulting trashes thrown everywhere to
be lessened.
• Teachers will be able to see the change and their works of telling student to throw
trash properly will decrease.
• School will be a fully garbage free zone in which students are disciplined and
motivated to throw their trashes.
• Community is free from any toxic wastes that can cause a sickness or disease in the
community.
• Future researchers will be able to find ways to revise this IP and there will be more
products of trash cans that can help reduce the garbages in the area.
1.4. Scope and Limitations

The study was organized at UE Manila. And its scope is limited only to UE high school
department to help students to be more discipline in throwing their trash in the trash
bin and this trash bin will help the janitors work faster and easier especially in a canteen.

One trash bin will be used for testing due to its limitations concerning the time and the
budget constraint.
Respondants are students enrolled in grade 7 to grade 10 in school year 2017-2018
because they are the students/people that this study mainly concerned and it is the
main point why we conduct this project.

The experiment needs further testing and experiments for a better result
