QUESTION 1

An analog signal is undergone sampling process under Discrete-Time System (DTS) to

become a discrete signal as shown in Figure 1 below. The sampling period is 0.5ms. The
discrete signal then undergone re-sampling process as shown in Figure 2.

xa[t] Discrete-Time x[n] = xa[nTs]

The expression of discrete signal that enters the DTS is shown below:

x[n] = 5cos(n3π/2) + 8sin(nπ/4) + 6cos(nπ/2) + 3cos(nπ/3)

(i) Derive the expression for an analog signal, xa[t].

(ii) Determine the Nyquist rate to sample an analog signal, xa[t].
(iii) Determine whether an aliasing is occurred or not?
Explain your answer.
(iv) If the resampling process is determined by the resampling factor, L=2 and
then followed with, M=3. Calculate the new sampling rate, Fs’ and the new
sequence, x’(n) for 0  n  3.

QUESTION 2

(a) In the signal the anti-aliasing filter is required prior to the sampling or re-sampling
process. Describe the condition to meet the requirement mentioned above.

(b) In the re-sampling process (sampling rate conversion), there are two basic
configurations as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. In Fig. 1, the re-sampling is
implemented by Downsampling (Decimation) factor, and then followed by
Upsampling (Interpolation) factor. Meanwhile, in Fig. 2, the re-sampling is
implemented by Upsampling (Interpolation) factor, and then followed by
Downsampling (Decimation) factor.
If D = I or M = L, shows that the output of the two configurations, x’ (n) as shown
in Figure 1 and Figure 2 are different.

D (M) I (L)
x (n) x’ (n)

QUESTION 3

A discrete-time signal, x(n) with the sampling period of 1ms is illustrated in Fig. 1. The
mathematical expression of the discrete-time signal is described as x(n) = 5cos(ωn – 0.3)
with an analog input signal bandwidth of 100 Hz. The discrete-time signal then undergoes
the re-sampling process as shown in Fig. 2. Determine the followings;
(i) The mathematical expression of the analog input signal, x(t).
(ii) The new sampling rate.
(iii) The new sequence of discrete time signal, x’(n).
(iv) Sketch the new sequence of discrete time signal.
(v) Explain how to avoid Aliasing to be occurred in this signal processing.

QUESTION 4

The expression of the input signal of digital signal processing as illustrated in Fig. 1 is
stated below. The sampling period that is applied to the ADC is 5ms and DAC is 2ms.
x(t) = 5cos(150πt) + 3sin(250t) + 2cos(500t)

(i) Obtain the expression for discrete-time signal, x(n).

(ii) Determine whether an aliasing is occurred or not? Justify your answer.
(iii) Obtain the output signal, y(t).
(iv) If the re-sampling process is applied to x(n) as shown in Fig. 2 with decimation
factor of 2 and interpolation factor of 3, determine the final sequence of x(n).
