Preface

1.4.2 User Operation

Do not operate your unit when a person is within eight inches (20 centimeters) of the antenna. A person or object within eight
inches (20 centimeters) of the antenna could impair call quality and may cause the unit to operate at a higher power level than
necessary, as well as expose that person to RF energy in excess of that established by the FCC RF Exposure Guidelines.
During transmission, some parts of the iO270 board may get hot. Be sure to take appropriate precautionary

!
Caution
measures and avoid touching the board shields with bare hands.

IMPORTANT: The unit must be installed in a manner that provides a minimum separation distance of eight inches
(20 centimeters) or more between the antenna and any persons in order to satisfy FCC RF exposure requirements.
IMPORTANT: The effective radiated power of the transmitter while connected to the evaluation board antenna complies with
the FCC RF exposure limits and satisfies the categorical exclusion requirements for mobile transmitters. The user should use
the antenna supplied with the evaluation board only, and not any other antenna.

1.4.3 Antenna Installation

• A minimum separation distance of eight inches (20 centimeters) must be maintained between the antenna and all persons.
• Connect the supplied antenna to the SMA male connector located on the evaluation board.

3.3 DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND CONFIGURATION OPTIONS

This section provides a detailed description of all EVB options, settings and interfaces.

3.3.1 Power Supply Sources

The EVB supports the connection of several alternate power supplies. The board also supports independent power supply to the
EVB circuits and to the iO270 (iO270 current consumption from one supply and EVB current consumption from another
supply).
There are two ways to supply 12 VDC to the board:
• A circular power jack U140
• Pin 1 of DC input block P1
See Figure 7 for reference.
Both 12VDC inputs are connected to the input of a 4VDC on-board switching regulator. Only one 12VDC supply should be
used at any one time. The on-board 4VDC can be used to provide power to the EVB, the iO270 or both, depending on the posi-
tion of Jumpers P60 and P66.
An external 4VDC source can be connected via Pin 3 of the DC input block P1. This external 4 VDC can be used to provide
power to the EVB, the iO270 or both, depending on the position of Jumpers P60 and P66. See Section 3.3.1.3, “Power Source
Selection” for more details.
The EVB contains also a 3VDC linear regulator. This regulator is supplied only from the on-board 4VDC regulator.

3.3.1.1 AC/DC Adapter Operation

When using a wall-mount AC/DC adapter, the adapter is connected to the power adapter connector U140. The adapter supplies
a constant 12 VDC/1A, which is regulated to a nominal 4 VDC on the EVB.

2 GND

3 GND

The polarity of the AC/DC adapter is marked on the EVB near U140.
The central pin is positive.

3.3.1.2 DC Power Source Operation

There are two options for supplying DC power to the Developer Board:
• Connect 10 to 14VDC to P1-1, which is regulated to a nominal 4 VDC on the EVB. Connect the DC power source to this
connector using a wire. Connect a second wire to P1-2, which is ground return.
• Connect 4VDC nominal voltage to P1-3. This input can accept DC voltages in the range of 3.3 V to 4.2 V. Use P1-2 as ground
return.

3.3.1.3 Power Source Selection

Jumpers P60 and P66 provide full flexibility in connecting the two 4VDC power supplies, on-board and external, to the EVB
circuits and to the iO270:
• Jumper P60 selects the power supply source to the iO270.
• Jumper P66 selects the power supply source to the EVB circuits.

Note

3.3.2 Communication Interfaces

The iO270 supports three serial communication interfaces:

• UART1
• USB
• UART2
UART1 and USB ports are multiplexed in the iO270, and therefore cannot be operated simultaneously.
The EVB provides two standard DB9 connectors for both UART ports and a standard USB connector.
For both UART interfaces, the EVB also provides level translation from the iO270’s CMOS levels to standard RS232 levels.
The selected serial connection is determined by the USB cable connection and Option Select lines.
To select the USB connection, the Option Select 1 pin should be High logic state and the USB cable should be connected.
To select RS232 communication, logic-low should be asserted on the Option Select 1 pin and the USB cable should be
unplugged.
See Section 3.3.4, “Option Select Switches” for more details.
The second RS232-2 interface is used primarily for GPS data acquisition.

3.3.2.1 RS232-1
The 9-pin, D-type RS232-1 serial port (J120) is the primary interface to iO270. iO270 RS232 signals are active-low CMOS-
level signals (0 to 3 V), converted by the EVB to standard RS232 levels for PC communications. This connector is connected
to the iO270 internal UART1.

3.7 GPS INTEGRATION GUIDELINES

This paragraphs provides the iO270 integrators with a step by step procedure for GPS integration.
The paragraph include:
• General overview
• Antenna specification
• Autonomous and assisted GPS fix

32 6802978C55-C
evaluation Board and Interfaces Description

• GPS fix with simulator

The iO270 is provided with two UFL RF connectors, one for both iDEN and GPS signals and one for GPS only. The integrator
should connect a GPS antenna to one of these connectors. The NMEA GPS data stream is available on the 70 pin main connec-
tor. The iO270 is expected to be flashed with valid Almanac GPS data.
During GPS operation, the GPS engine needs the Almanac data which is expected to be flashed into the iO270 in the factory. If
the Almanac week in the iO270 is 13 weeks older than the current Almanac week, then the Almanac is considered obsolete. In
this situation, the GPS will automatically replace the existing Almanac with any other updated Almanac as soon the GPS will
receive it (even a partial Almanac). Almanac storage also performed after GPS turn off (AT+WVGPS=0). The third option for
storing the Almanac is by shutdown command (AT+WVPO). After sending this command, the iO270 has to receive DC power
for another 10 sec before actually shutting down the power line.
The current GPS week info can be found from the following URL:
http://www.csgnetwork.com/multitimedisp.html
The current Almanac data is available in:
http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/gps/almanacs.htm

3.7.1 GPS Antenna

The most important feature of the antenna is its radiation pattern shape which should be as flat as possible and provides wide
sky coverage. It should be tested within the integrated device (as close as possible to the final product). The GPS antenna should
have the following characteristics:
1. Frequency band: 1575.42MHz +/-2MHz.
2. Antenna Gain (including cable): 0 - 5 dBi.
3. Radiation pattern - as flat as possible. No nulls in the sky view.
4. Polarization: Right Hand circular polarization (preferred) or linear.
5. Return loss: better than 10dB.
Make sure that the average total gain of the antenna (including cable, filter, etc.) does not exceed 5dBi. The antenna is expected
to be connected to the iO270 connector prior to operation of the GPS. Do not disconnect the antenna during fix request.
An indication for good HW and antenna functionality is that all "visible" satellites are detected, and their C/No within the limits
of 35 - 45 dBHz.

3.7.2 GPS Path

The iO270 has 3 alternate GPS receiver paths:

1. Through the main antenna connector. The integrator may connect passive or active antenna but maintain the antenna
requirements as specified in “GPS Antenna”.
2. Through the separate GPS connector - Passive antenna.
3. Through the separate GPS connector - Active antenna. If this option is selected, the iO270 supplies 3V DC (20mA max)
through this connector. In addition, the GPS path contains a 20dB attenuator. Accordingly, the gain of the active antenna
(including cable loss and all line up) shall be between 20 - 25 dBi.

3.7.2.1 Selecting GPS Path

The selection between the three options is performed using the following AT commands:
1. For main antenna connector (combined with iDEN), use - AT+WVANTC=0.
2. For separate GPS connector, passive antenna, use - AT+WVANTC=1.
3. For separate GPS connector, active antenna, use - AT+WVANTC=2.
To observe GPS current status, use - AT+WVANTC?.

3.7.2.2 GPS Antenna Connection Instructions on EVB

In order to communicate between the iO270 and the EVB perform the following steps (see Figure 10.):
1. Connect the RF cable (U.FL to U.FL, 3087563V13) from iO270's iDEN&GPS connector
(J501, located at iO270 corner) to EVB's iDEN&GPS ANT (J403).
2. Connect the GPS Active Antenna (8587526V01) to J401 on EVB.
3. Send command -AT+WVANTC=0.
The GPS active antenna circuitry of the Developer's Kit is designed for a specific antenna (Motorola P/N:
8587526V01).

3.7.3 GPS Request

Start the GPS engine and direct the NMEA data stream toward the requested UART. This is done using the AT+WVGPS
command. If only a single fix information is required (without the NMEA data stream), avoid this command and send the
WVRLA command.
AT+WVGPS=1 Turns the GPS on and enables NMEA to UART A.
AT+WVGPS=2 Turns the GPS on and enables NMEA to UART B.
AT+WVGPS=3 Turns the GPS on and enables NMEA to both UART A and UART B.
AT+WVGPS=4 Turns the GPS on and enables NMEA to the channel that the command was executed on.
AT+WVGPS=0 Turns the GPS off, stops NMEA stream and saves the updated Almanac if the existing Almanac is more
the 13 weeks old.

3.7.4 Autonomous Operation

In Autonomous Fix mode, the GPS engine calculates the fix based purely on Almanac data. If assist data is available, the iO270
will use it. Otherwise, the GPS will continue calculating the fix without assist requesting.
The following command is sent for autonomous single fix request:
AT+WVRLA=1,1,2
For continuous tracking and NMEA stream in autonomous mode use the GPS request command only:
AT+WVGPS=4
To stop the GPS NMEA stream and turn off the GPS, use the GPS request command:

6802978C55-C 35
evaluation Board and Interfaces Description

AT+WVGPS=0
The following Command is used for shutdown:
AT+WVPO
After the shutdown command is sent, the Almanac data will be saved in the iO270. Please wait 10 second before
shutting down the power to the iO270.

Note

Further information regarding the AT+ WVRLA commands can be found in the SW Developer’s Guide: GPS and Location
Services +WVRLA.

3.7.5 Assisted Operation

In Assisted fix, the GPS engine checks whether it has updated assist data or else request the server to provide assist data before
starting to calculate the fix. Assisted fix can be tested only when the iO270 is connected to an iDEN system that supports
Assisted fix (e.g. Nextel in USA and "MIRS" in Israel).
After the iO270 is registered to the iDEN system, send the following command for a single Assisted fix request. Note that you
should avoid the WVGPS command and send only the WVRLA command. In this situation, the fix data will be given within 30
seconds.
AT+WVRLA=1,1,1
The following command is used for shutdown:
AT+WVPO
After the shutdown command is sent, the Almanac data will be saved in the iO270. Please wait 10 second before
shutting down the power to the iO270.

Note

Further information regarding the AT+ WVRLA commands, can be found in the SW Developer’s Guide: GPS and Location
Services +WVRLA.

3.7.6 Fix with Simulator

A Spirent STR4500 GPS simulator (or equivalent) can be used for testing the GPS receiver performance (without the antenna)
in autonomous fix mode (Assisted test is relatively complicated since time transfer board is required for extraction of the
Assisted data from the simulator).
It is necessary to ensure that the scenario runs in the simulator has a valid Almanac. The scenario week should not be older than
the Almanac week in the iO270 but no more than 13 weeks newer.
Connect the simulator to the main UFL connector via a 10 dB attenuator and remove the SIM card (to prevent unintentional
iDEN transmission). Adjust the simulator signal level to -130dBm at the main UFL connector. Then, proceed with the autono-
mous fix procedure as specified above.
In order to test the second GPS connector with passive antenna option, connect the simulator to the UFL connector and adjust
the simulator signal level to -130dBm at the UFL connector. Then, proceed with the autonomous fix procedure as specified
above.
If it is required to test with simulator the active GPS antenna option with the second UFL connector, use DC block to ovoid
damage to the simulator and increase the GPS signal to overcome the 20dB attenuator on the iO270.
