Second/Foreign Language Learning Reflection

Hello, my name is Mila Nurwulan Sari. My student number is 17322104. I’m


studying in Islamic university of Indonesia in English department. I’m happy to study here.
Because I can learn anything such as paraphrasing and summarizing in academic reading and
writing. Without further ado, Here I will share about my experience first learning English
lesson. Start from I couldn’t speak it until I can speak in front of many people. First of all, I
was known English lesson when I was in play group. I studied about number, color, and the
name of animal in English. Is not about that only, I have learned singing a song with English.
Actually, I don’t really like English lesson at the time. Because when I studied about it, this is
so difficult to say and bored, that’s why I don’t very like it. I learned English with teacher
and my brother in kampoeng inggris pare. I learn with them until now. Never

When I learned English lesson in the playgroup, the teacher taught us like they
showed us about the picture of the number, color, and name of animal, in order we would
understand about the lesson. Then, I sit at elementary school namely class 1. There are still
repeating the playgroup lesson. And entered 3rd grade and then I study new material which is
about time, hobby and so on. At the time, I still didn’t like the English lesson. Because the
teacher was killer. We have to memorize the vocabulary. That’s way I don’t like this lesson.
Long by long, I tried to understand English lessons when in grade 3 of junior high school.
The teacher taught me in a way that was easy for other children to understand. The teacher
teaches by giving an example of the vocabulary that has been given. Through this method,
students are easy to remember what the teacher has taught and students are also told to
imitate what the teacher has said so that the student will remember with a longer term.
According to “Behaviourist Perpektif “that the behaviourist viewed imitation and practice as
the primary processes on languange development.

When I was in grade 1 high school, English lessons made other students feel this
lesson was a burden to other children including me. Many students don't attend class because
of this lesson. Because the teaching is very monotonous and always gives assignments
without students understanding this lesson. Long story short, the teacher was aware of the
teaching he taught. Turns out to make students bored. and finally the teacher changes the way
he teaches by giving many practices that make students not bored like games, practice,
communicating with friends using English and so on, this will make students feel more
involved in this lesson. And the teacher motivates students so as not to get bored with English
and finally I was motivated. I learned a lot through the teacher, with which I was able to learn
a lot about English. From starting to communicate with him using English, a lot of practice
speaks in his lessons. And I want to improve my language when the teacher reprimands me
and the teacher helps me to improve it. With a (Lahey , 1978) perspective, it is clear that
sometimes repeat the series of related practice sentence.

Related to the motivation of the teacher I told you earlier, that I have many challenges
that I have from learning English. I was a little bit confident about what I could learn. I have
lots of practices. And many say I am arrogant, stylish, until someone ever said that my
English is not correct. They were like mocking my grammar at the time. And finally I forced
myself to learn English through the internet by watching movies using the English subtitles.
From there, I have gotten lots of vocab and grammar. And not to miss anymore, I often
communicate with my father using English even though there are wrong words. According to
(Lieven, 2008) Children learned languange from their language experiences there is no other
way. I agree with Elena and Michael's opinion about their perspective that students learn
according to their different experiences. And now the motivation to like English is from
movies, songs, games and anything related to English while it's positive to learn. Not only
learning from that, I also have a brother who can speak English fluently and he has also been
to the English village pare. There he learned a lot about English, from reading speaking
writing and listening. He can control it. from it I can learn English easily and practically. I
was motivated by him to force ourselves to speak English even though the structure was
wrong. he also told me that speaking English so that confidence began with talking in front of
the mirror. So that we are not ashamed or feel inferior in English. According to (Catherine,
1995) that effect on acquisition of the way which adult talk to and interact with young
children.

Every student has their own expectations in learning English, there are those who
want to be able to go abroad, can chat with foreign and so on. But it's different with me. My
hope is to be able to teach English to my parents, I was able to share what I got from learning
English. I was able to help them get to know this second language that has become
worldwide.

Now I like English lessons, so I have majored in English education here. And so that I
can focus on what my goal is to be able to share with my parents about the foreign language
or the second language is not only parents but those who need it. Never get bored to explore
our language insights from here we can learn their culture also. And I hope I will never get
bored with learning English lesson anytime, anywhere. I will share what I have, even if only
a little
