Abstract

The world is currently facing major problems; one of the problems is energy crisis. Since

the first energy source, natural gas was discovered, more sources of energy was suddenly

discovered and widely used in the society, but the problem for a more suitable and more

effective energy source is still a major problem. Because the current energy source of the world

is gasoline, fossil fuel, etc. are greatly contributed in the pollution of our surroundings. And

power plants and other energy source is vastly found on urban areas such as cities, etc. but in

remote areas such as countryside, islands and provinces are lacking energy source because the

government does not give much of their attention to the places with discrete number of people.

This study show the benefits that the society can have if renewable energy, such as solar

energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, hydroelectric energy and many more renewable energy

will be used as the main source of energy. This study will focus in using solar energy as

alternative source of energy especially here in the Philippines, which has a tropical climate, by

constructing a self-sustaining power bank with built in taser or “PoLar Bank”. And having a

conceptual analysis between the PoLar Bank and a standard power bank by conducting multiple

tests to differentiate the two subjects and reach a suitable answer for the stated problems by the

researchers

CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

All our lauded technological progress, our very civilization –– is like the axe in the hand

of the pathological criminal. – Albert Einstein

It has become terribly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. The

technological advancement has been increasing every minute, every hour and every day. Our

society is so eager to create and develop an innovative product, gadgets, and machine just to

make their lives easier to lengthen their lives.

Over the past period there are debut of many types of devices including smartphones and

tablets. Today’s people have already witnessed the evolution of smart phones. People are now

living in a millennium period where everyone is so excited to have the latest mobile phone. Most

of them are updated and eager to get the latest cellphone that trend in the market.

Indeed, cellphone is really a necessity nowadays, people couldn’t leave their homes

without cellphone in their pocket maybe because of its multi-function features where everyone

can use for communication, social media, taking pictures, listening to music and playing videos.

Based on Statistics (2018), Technology & Telecommunication statistic shows the number of

smart phones user in the Philippines from 2015 to 2018 is 34.44 million users.

Rapid economic development, increased consumer purchasing power bank, commonly

known as a battery charger, is a portable charger used to charge a wide range of digital products.

It is used as an external battery, plug-in charger or back-up charger for charging a rechargeable

battery or secondary cell.

8
Page |9

Advancement of technology and use of portable devices has driven the growth and

demand for supply of power bank. According to Costello, Hector (2018), “Global Portable

Power Bank Market 2018 Forecast 2025” report is a valuable source of guidance and direction

for companies and individuals who are looking for investment or opportunities in growing

Portable Power Bank Industry. However, the world’s resources are diminishing, government and

non-government organizations are pushing a greener solution through the use of renewable

energy sources. It was forecasted by some scientists such as Thomas Alva Edison that Solar

Energy will be the future energy source. The portable solar phone charger is one of the devices

that use light to charge a phone. It is portable that people on the road or on camping can carry it

into their pocket and charge their phones where ever they want. However, people who are using

phone in public places is no longer safe and it is more efficient if there is a solar power bank

device where you can use it as charger at the same time you can use it as self-defense mechanism

against cellphone theft.

The researchers come up with study to provide a self sustaining power bank for those

who live in rural areas and remote islands that doesn’t have stable energy source. This study can

be useful especially here in Philippines that have a tropical climate.

Review of Related Literature

Renewable energy

According to Vermar et al. (2014), the use of renewable energy such as; solar power,

biomass, hydro power, wind energy, geothermal energy, have a huge impact as a source of

energy on power plant.

9
P a g e | 10

Based on the study of the researcher Brahim (2014), it will be beneficial to the

Philippines to use renewable energy as the main source of energy, because the Philippine’s

current main source of energy is oil. Even though there are places in the Philippines that use

renewable energy, they are still dominated by the oil energy.

Based on the study of Mureddu et al. (2015), the inflating number issues in our

environment triggered the implementations of renewable energy based models. Renewable

energy getting more demand that cause balancing in terms of using non-renewable energy. And

this is changing the energy management and making problems that can at least be understood.

Based on the study of Owusu and Sardokie (2016), the inflating demand on energy all

around the world, they need to find more source of energy. But it contributes to pollution

because the world’s main source of energy is non-renewable energy. So, using renewable energy

can help to reduce the contribution in global warming and provide a new and clean energy for

the future generations.

According to McCulley (2015), using renewable energy in remote areas is helpful in

harvesting solar energy and storing it in a portable Mobile Elemental Power Plant II. It can

supply 3000W of AC power and it’s towable. Because it can be disassembled, it can be used in

medical sites, humanitarian projects, disaster relief locations and military application.

Solar Energy

According to Sharma et al. (2015) and Fayeez et al. (2015), more power stations can be

built with proper allocation of time, money, effort and enough study about solar power energy.

And it means the community will start to use and rely to solar technologies instead of using oil as

the source of energy. Using solar energy is so effective in terms of energy production in remote

10
P a g e | 11

areas where other source of energy is not that effective. And solar energy is the eco-friendliest

power source. But it’s also like the diesel generators because of the very high initial cost.

Based on the study of Cabrillos et al. (2018), there are 6.8 billion cellphone users around

the world and it keeps increasing because of the high demand in the market. So, as the number of

cellphone users increases, the demand in electricity is also increasing. And this study suggests

that using renewable energy, especially solar energy, can help us in our energy problems.

According to Gohil et al. (2017) and Uwibambe et al. (2017), the power necessities of the

world including India are hoisted at aggravating rate and the control request has been expanding.

The non-renewable energy sources (i.e., coal, oil and flammable gas) and other customary assets,

by and by utilized for age of electrical vitality. It isn't adequate or reasonable to keep Age with

consistently expanding interest of the electrical vitality of the world. The age of electrical power

by chilly based steam control plant and atomic power plants causes contamination, which is

probably going to be more hurtful in future because of extensive creating limit on one side and it

became extreme because more prominent attention to the individuals in this regard. This venture

give thought regarding non-traditional Energy sources and why we are going for that non-regular

vitality sources. The best possible employments of sun based vitality and its distinctive

application which are utilizing at home protection part, marines, remote territory and so forth.

Even though that there are many technological advancements, there are still countries that

struggle in the scarcity of energy resources like India, that only depend in hydro power because

fuel and thermal energy is still on small scales and to sustain the energy demand, using

renewable energy especially the use of solar panel can be an alternative source of energy

especially in rural areas.

11
P a g e | 12

Solar power bank

According to Ties and Soh (2014), building a mini low cost solar power bank that has a

rechargeable battery and a charge controller to monitor will be beneficial to the society.

Based on the study of Agarwal (2016), IJIR (2017) and IJECT (2014), building a power

bank that use solar energy as the main source of energy can be a handy thing when travelling.

Also power bank is important especially for those who travel a lot and doesn't have any access to

electricity or for those who work and are using cell phones, they need to extend the usage time of

their cell phones for their day to be productive, and making a power bank that can be charged

using solar power will be more efficient than an original power bank because you can also

charge your power bank even without any access to electricity. The solar energy has a huge

potential as an alternative source of energy. So building a power bank that can absorb energy

from sunlight by using photovoltaic cells that has a USB port that is compatible to charge any

mobile device.

Based on the study of Bekhe and Harun (2016), Malaysia electricity generation and

consumption are important issues. Currently 97.6% of Malaysian people have access to

electricity in many sectors such as housing, transportation, manufacturing, construction and etc.

Malaysia showed continuing increase in electricity consumption by 8.7% from 1980 to 2014.

Electricity generation shows similar growth at 8.4%. Realizing that the electrical consumption is

increasing. Currently, the issues about energy are not only a local thread even in other countries

like Malaysia where their government project was reviewing the energy policy to ensure long-

term reliability and security of energy resources. To fulfill the electricity demand and to resolve

the projected energy poverty not only locally but even in foreign countries that are trying to

design an energy source derived from natural resources which will not deplete when used.

12
P a g e | 13

Energy usage

According to Dubey (2016) and Abolhosseini et al. (2014), regardless the possibilities,

there are provocations that prevent the sustainability of renewable energy with regards to climate

change alleviation. Suggestions which when contemplated would help reach the aim of

renewable energy consequently to lessen excretions, alleviate climate change and give a good

environment as well as good energy for all and for succeeding generations. Energy is needed in

our day by day living as a process of enhancing human growth guiding to financial growth and

efficiency.

Based on the studies of Najideen and Larwashden (2017) and Brahim (2014), there are

ways to conserve the energy available. The use of renewable energy especially here in the

Philippines will be advisable particularly the use of solar energy because it’s so abundant in

places or countries with warm climate. But it needs to be thoroughly examined to determine the

advantages and difficulties in using solar power as the source energy.

Based on the research paper of Joshi (2015), using utilized part of a circuit that enhances

the abilities of portable power banks that you can buy in the market are talked about. Parts like

DC voltage controllers and USB links are utilized to make a circuit with greater utility compared

to products in the market. It offers extra favorable circumstances and more straightforward way

to deal with these convenient power banks. This outline will help in reducing generally cost of

the gadget and furthermore help individuals by unwinding the need of telephone chargers and

separate chargers for USB gadgets. It will be useful throughout the days, as, the speed and

progressions in telephones are at an exponential rate which diminishes the charge of telephones

enormously. Consequently, this calls for less demanding answers for telephone charging. This

13
P a g e | 14

will likewise demonstrate supportive to the recently developing wear-capable electronic

contraptions as, the size and power rating is perfect for that utilization too.

Taser

Based on the study of Monti et al. (2015) and Hamilton (2017), Combining the protective

case of a cellphone with a personal self-defense, such as taser, will provide not just a mean for

communication, but also for self-defense purposes.

According to Chang (2016), a multipurpose taser or stun gun must include launchers that

will let the taser to function without direct contact to an individual.

The Law of Conservation of Energy states that “Energy cannot be created nor destroyed

but can only be transferred from one form to another”. This is where the idea of solar energy

came from, to transfer the sun’s raging light into lifelong, safe and sustainable energy source for

the human beings. The process on how sunlight is converted into electrical energy is basically

because the sunlight is absorbed by Photovoltaic (PV) cell made of semiconductor material like

silicon or commonly known as solar cells, and directly converts into electricity.

When the light strikes the semiconductor material, a certain amount is absorbed which

means energy from the source is transferred into the material and magnetic field causes electrons

to flow in a certain direction that now produces the current. The power generated by the PV cells

flow through a circuit design to charge the battery.

Potential of Solar Energy

Solar energy can become the main source of energy for all. In fact, other countries like

China are promoting solar panel as a medium in converting solar energy into electricity. Solar

energy is the future source of our energy source and continuous improvement and study are

expected to happen for fine tuning of this discovery. The market share of solar energy is still

low. Current electricity generation from PVs is only of the order of 2.6 GW compared to 36.3 W

for all renewable energies, hydroelectric power excluded. Developed countries are steadily

increasing their investments in solar power plants, and IEA projections for 2030 give an

enhancement of solar electricity generation up to 13.6 GW (80% of which will be from

photovoltaic cells, and the rest (2.4GW) from solar thermal plants. However, this amount will

not exceed 6% of the total electricity production from non-hydro renewable energies. It is worth

noting that passive

15
P a g e | 16

solar technologies for water heating, not included in these statistics, represent a fairly large

amount of power. IEA estimates a power production of 5.3GW in 2002 and an increase up to

46GW by 2030.

the outcomes of the research to identify the suitable answer on the stated questions

Statement of the Problem

Mobile phones are currently the most popular form of wireless communication almost all

the countries throughout the world. However, the average lifetime of a cell phone battery is only

around 8-12 hours with moderate usage. This becomes very inconvenient for people especially

on the road or occupied with work.

This study aims to know the efficiency of solar-powered phone charger with built-in taser

as an emergency source of energy and self-defense weapon compare to a commercial power

bank and taser.

Specifically, the study will answer the following sub-problems.

1. How long does it take for the PoLar Bank to be fully charged using its solar panel?

2. What are the differences between PoLar Bank and commercial power bank in terms of:

2.1 Charging time of:

2.1.1 PoLar Bank

2.1.2 Mobile phones

3. How much voltage can be released by the taser of the PoLar Bank?

Assumption

1. The researchers assumed that the PoLar bank’s charging time using the solar panel

will depend on the temperature. The higher the temperature the faster the PoLar Bank

17
P a g e | 18

will be fully charged. And if the temperature is 35◦C, the Polar Bank can be fully

charged within 9 hours and 45 mins

2. 2.1

2.1.1 The researchers assumed that the charging time of the two power banks will

vary on the quality of the charger module and the lithium ion battery. For the

PoLar Bank, it will be fully charged within 4 hours and 50 mins and for a

standard power bank, it will be fully charged within 4 hours and 40 mins

.2.1.2 the researchers assumed that the charging time of cell phones using the

power banks will vary on the quality of the charger module. For the PoLar bank,

it can fully charge an average smart phone within 4 hours and 30 mins and while

using a standard power bank, it will take up to 4 hours and 20 mins to fully

charged an average smart phone

3. The researchers assumed that the taser can produce 200 volts. The amount of voltage

emitted will largely depend on the voltage generator used.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on constructing a power bank that used sunlight as an alternative

source of energy and a feature that can be used as a non-lethal self-defense mechanism.

The main parts of this prototype are; battery, charger module high voltage generator and

solar panel. The solar panel that was used must match the voltage of the battery for it to work

properly.

The prototype will be compared to a standard power bank. To be able to compare the

two, the researchers must know the characteristics of the two power bank, after that, the

researchers performed experiments to determine the difference between the two power banks.

18
P a g e | 19

This study was not able to use other alternative energy source, aside from the solar

energy. And this prototype will be at a disadvantage when there is no sunlight.

Significance of the Study

People already realized how much harm they have caused to the environment when it

comes to take a stand against these environmental problems. This study focuses in discovering

an alternative energy sources in order to sustain the needs of human.

This study aims to prove that using solar power as an alternative source of energy by

using power banks can benefits us because we are living in a society with advance technologies.

Gadgets is essential in our daily lives and can lessen then crime rate because it has a built in

electroshock weapon with the help of electricians and electrical engineers. This study will benefit

the following:

For the students, this study can contribute information’s and ideas in community and

being to the current problem and can motivate them to conserve more energy.

For the government, the findings of this study can motivate the government officials to

use more renewable energy as an alternative source to avoid and lessen the pollutants emitted in

our environment. And focus not just in the cities but to the inhabited island far away. And it will

aware them the situation of the country in terms of the safety of the citizens.

For the society, this study can motivate people to be wiser is using energy because our

country’s population is increasing, so the energy demand is also increasing. And some Non-

government Organizations can organize programs that involve energy conserving and using

renewable energy as an alternative source. And it can be a way to ensure their safety.

19
P a g e | 20

For the future researchers, this study will serve as a reference data or guide in

conducting research about using solar energy as an alternative energy.

The researchers first make the battery of the power bank. 5 lithium ion batteries are used

for storing electricity. An electrical tape is needed to bind the batteries together and solder its end

with copper wires for the electricity to flow in each battery.

And then, the charger module was connected in the battery. The charger module is used

to monitor and display the battery percentage. It was connected by copper wires.

After that, the researchers start to make the taser. The materials needed are: high voltage

generator, button, copper wires and a thin metal rod. And then all the parts are assembled. First,

the high voltage generator has 2 pairs of wires in both ends. The first pair is the positive and the

negative wire and the other end are two wires that only emit electricity. The researchers connect

the high voltage generator to the battery and between them is the button for activating the taser.

And on the other end, the thin metal rod was connected to act as the fangs of the taser.

After that, the researchers connect an USB cord to the back of the solar panel for it to be

able to charge the power bank. And plug it to the charger module.

And then, the researchers arrange the parts of the power bank, put to its rightful places to

make case from plywood. The parts are glued to the plywood surface and then enclose it with

plywood.

And lastly, a trial and error test was conducted to ensure that the prototype is working.

CHAPTER 4

Summary of Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations

Summary of Findings

According to the findings obtained, the researchers proved that the Solar Power Bank

with built in Taser can really be a source of energy when there is no access to electricity. Even if

the power bank itself is empty, by using the solar panel it can be charged. And if an individual is

in dangerous situation, like robbery, the taser is effective because it can stun a person without

inflicting serious damages. A device that not just stores energy for emergency use, but it’s also a

self – supplying power bank because of the solar panel that use solar energy as the source of

electricity. And the researchers have answered the problems stated:

1. How long does it take for the PoLar Bank to be fully charged using its solar panel?

The PoLar Bank was fully charged using the solar panel in average time of 10

hours and 22 minutes.

2. What are the differences between PoLar Bank and commercial power bank in terms of:

2.1 Charging time:

2.1.1 PoLar Bank

The charging time of PoLar Bank has an average time of 5 hours

45 mins while the commercial power bank’s charging time has an average

of 5 hours and 55 minutes. Therefore, the Polar Bank has faster time to be

27
P a g e | 28

fully charged than a commercial power bank. They have a difference of 10

minutes.

2.1.2 Mobile phones

Based on the data that were obtained, it shows that PoLar Bank is

faster than a commercial power bank when it comes in charging mobile

devices. The first subject, Vivo V5s, it has an average time of 4 hours and

38 minutes using the PoLar Bank while using a commercial power bank, it

has an average time of 4 hours and 44 minutes. And they have a difference

of 6 minutes. While the second subject, Samsung Galaxy S5, it has an

average time of 4 hours using the PoLar Bank while using a commercial

power bank, it has an average time of 4 hours and 8 minutes. And they

have a difference of 8 minutes. Therefore, the PoLar Bank has faster

charing time than a commercial power bank.

3. How much voltage can be released by the taser of the PoLar Bank?

The taser of the PoLar Bank can emit 250 volts of electricity. The amount

of voltage released by the taser greatly affected by the high voltage

generator used. A multi-tester was used to measure the volts being

released by the taser.

28
P a g e | 29

Conclusion

Based on the experimental study that has been conducted, the researchers have come up

with the following conclusions:

1.) The PoLar Bank can charge itself without the use of electricity or wall plugs

2.) The PoLar Bank is very useful especially in rural and remote areas because even though

their area lacks the source of energy, they can use the abundant sunlight in their

surroundings as the new source of energy using the PoLar Bank

3.) The PoLar Bank can be used as a self-defense device that doesn’t inflict any serious

injury to a person

4.) The size of PoLar Bank is bulky but compact on the inside and still can be handheld

5.) The solar panel feature of the PoLar Bank will be at a disadvantage in rainy seasons

because of the lack of sunlight in this particular part of the years

6.) The PoLar Bank’s charging module has a huge contribution why it has a better charging

capability from a commercial power bank. Because the charging module is the one that

regulate and monitor the electricity that goes in and out of the power bank. The higher the

quality of the charger module, the better the performance it can contribute to the whole

PoLar Bank itself.

7.) The solar panel can have a faster charging capability when the temperature is high. The

higher the temperature, more energy it can produce.

Recommendations

This product is highly recommended especially for those who live in rural and remote

areas, places that struggle with energy shortage. This product can get energy from sunlight and

29
P a g e | 30

can be used as a non-lethal self-defense device. It’s handy advisable for those who always go on

a trip. And it’s cheaper compare to a standard 10000mAh power bank.

Students. Because gadgets are essential part of a student’s education nowadays, they can

use the PoLar Bank to extend the battery life of their gadgets to its fullest, even they ran out of

battery, whenever wherever they are, they can charge it.

Government. The idea of this power bank using solar panel or any renewable energy,

can be a way to solve the energy crisis because the main energy sources of many countries are

stressing the environment and contributing to pollution. And allocating some funds of the

government to build eco-friendly power plant, will bring many benefits because Philippines will

no longer buy or rely on other countries and getting energy from non-renewable energy sources

just to sustain the energy demand of the Philippines

Society. It will be beneficial especially for the communities in remote places or islands

that have no stable energy source. As long as there’s sunlight, they can charge their gadgets.

Future Researchers. Support the use of renewable energy to the future technologies and

machines. And by having a deep study regarding to this matter, future researchers can improve

this study and prototype. Always set your mind to what you really want to do. Improve this study

and the prototype to help the society lessen the energy crisis by using renewable energy as a new

source of energy.
