INDONESIA GOVERNMENT SHOULD

INVEST MORE ON CREATIVE INDUSTRY

The creative industry sector in Indonesia is given less attention by the government than
another industrial sector. It is shown by how the creative industry is not included as a focus for
‘Industry 4.0 Program’. It is also shown by the poor quality of the output from this sector. The
reason why creative industry sector in Indonesia is given less attention is because the
government assumes that creative industry sector could not make high income like other
industrial sectors. However, this is so unfortunate. Indonesia Government should have invested
more in the creative industry sector. Regarding that, this essay will provide the reasons why the
Indonesia Government should invest more in the creative industries sector.

Creative industry can bring high income. There are some countries in the world which
can get high income because of their creative industries, as example is South Korean. By its
creative industry, South Korean could pass through their economy crisis in 1997-1998. At that
time, President Dae-Jung Kim was borrowing funds from IMF. The South Korean President then
decided to invest in some industrial sector which is creative industry sector was his most priority.
In 2005, South Korean Government invested about $1 Billion for their creative industry.
Therefore, in 2014 South Korean creative industry sector made contribute for their GDP (Gross
Domestic Product) about $11 Billion. It is about 10 times of their first investment. This is show
that creative industry could make high income when it gets attention and supported by the
Government.

It is been known that Indonesia is rich for its minerals and petroleum. Therefore, mineral
and oil industry in Indonesia get a lot of attention from the Government. Unfortunately,
Government fail to acknowledge that mineral and oil industry are included as Energy Industrial
sector which could be perish someday. Then, it is wrong to invest on them meanwhile creative
industry is the opposite. Creative industry as an industrial sector which based on idea and
innovation breakthrough, is an industrial sector that impossible which more likely to last forever,
unlike the energy industries and others natural resources. Creative industry will keep growing
and will not be perish as long as human exist. It also has been predicted as one of the industrial
sector that will grow even bigger in 20 years later.

There are so many talented and creative people in creative industry who choose either to
work overseas or with foreign company. The poor facilities and system in Indonesia are the
reasons. The facilities to support the Creative Industries in Indonesia are really insufficient, for
example many of Indonesian Animation still using ‘frame-by-frame’ animation, meanwhile in
America already using ‘Motion Graphic’ animation. It doesn’t end here. The systems that
Government made for creative industry sector is also bad, one of them is KPI (Komisi Penyiaran
Indonesia) system. There are so many KPI’s rules which make the creative industry worker feel
so restricted and they can’t freely to express their inspiration. Therefore, those talented and
professional people choose to work overseas or with foreign company which can bring them
their fullest need.

According to those paragraphs, it shows that creative industry sector has a lot of
advantages and really worth, even though nowadays Indonesia Government is still given less
attention towards it. Therefore, Indonesia Government is expected to pay more attention and
invest more on creative industry sector.
