Interdisciplinary Text Assignment

Context:

If the agriculture teacher is having difficulties in getting students to understand a concept (in this
case the concept is cattle) then they might reach out to the music teacher to help come up with
creative lessons or resources that students can use to help students in developing an
understanding of new concepts. Not only does this help the agriculture teacher through helping
students retain information but it also helps the music teacher provide students with opportunities
to create and perform music.

As a Set:

Learning the anatomy of any animal is difficult and agricultural instructors must recognize that.
As we sat down and began working on this assignment, we thought that giving students an
opportunity to work with music would be a more engaging way of learning the agricultural
content and giving them learning strategies that they could use during an assessment. Music is
used within the agricultural industry in several different aspects. Many people only know about
the agriculture that is sung about in famous country songs, other people know about agriculture
because of parody videos that are released. Music is also used by many farmers and ranchers
when working with their livestock species, as you will see in our texts. Our texts fit together to
create an experience where students are learning about cattle parts identification and beef cattle
behavior, while also creating music to remember and more deeply understand the agricultural
content.

Objectives:

Agricultural Education:

1. Individually, students will accurately identify the parts of a beef animal on an exam.
2. In pairs, students will research and explain the multiple factors in beef animal behavior.
Music Education:

1. Students will create and perform a song about cattle that makes sense both lyrically and
musically.
2. Students will listen to instrumental music and create their own sense of imagery to
compare the music to the life of cattle.

Literacy Based Learning:

1. Students will evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats to

gain a more comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter.

disciplines. It shows that both agriculture and music are intertwined and in some ways dependent
on each other.

Use: In agricultural education, students will see that sometimes we have to think outside of the
box when determining best animal care practices. In music education, students will see that they
can use their musical talents to create a comforting environment for animals which will help
them create their instrumental piece.

the location of beef cattle parts. It interacts with the user in a game like fashion, which will leave
students intrigued and willing to spend more time on the content.

This app is an interactive model of a cow, where you can view internal systems of a cow either
one by one or in any combination of systems, from any angle and any zoom level. (If in a school,
I would ask my school for the funds to purchase the app as the teacher, and we as a class could
look through the app).

Rationale: I chose this text because it is a highly interactive way to get students to explore the
different parts of beef cattle. It also gives students with varying levels of understanding to either
focus on the needed content or climb into more enrichment and higher levels of learning.
