Research Question: What are the social implications of increasing discrimination against females

in the US Navy?

Hypothesis 1: Discrimination against women in the US Navy affects the confidence and self-

esteem of women, therefore, affecting their productivity in the workplace. Such women who are

discriminated against lack the morale to work and their on-the-job performance often diminishes

due to this. (Thomas&Thomas, 2011).Many women suffering the effects of discrimination often

have feelings of isolation and furthermore such occurrences may affect the emotional,

psychological, reproductive and mental health of the women. The affected women may also be

vulnerable to illnesses and other complications due to the lack of self-esteem. The concerned

women are more likely to have work conflicts with colleagues and may have constant problems

related to productivity in the workplace.

Hypothesis 2: Discrimination against women in the US Navy is also linked towards increasing

cases of rape and violence against women in the Navy (Rosenfeld, Newell&Le, 2012).Often,

those who discriminate against these women are more likely to participate in violent acts against

these women, therefore, putting their safety in jeopardy. Women in such scenarios may become

antisocial and resent the company of male colleagues, and may feel uncomfortable in their

presence (Jang, Zippay&Park,2014).Women facing discrimination in such instances are likely to

have pregnancies at work and also face possibilities of performing an abortion as a result of this.

Women encountering discrimination in the workplace are more likely to fall prey to alcoholism

and substance abuse, and may become over dependent on these. It may, therefore, affect their

work performance immensely.
