CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Backround

Globalization has grown due to advances in transportation and communication

technology. With the increased global interactions comes the growth of international
trade, ideas, and culture. Globalization is primarily an economic process of interaction
and integration that’s associated with social and cultural aspects. However, conlficts and
diplomacy are also large part of the history of globalization, and modern globalization.

Economically, globalization involves goods, services, the economic resources of

capital, technology, and data. Also, the expansions of global markets liberalize the
economic activities of the exchange of goods and funds. Removal of cross-border trade
barriers has made formation of global markets more feasible. The steam locomotive,
steamship, jet engine, and container ships are some of the advances in the means of
transport while the rise of the telegraph and its modern offspring, the Internet and mobile
phones show development in telecommunications infrastructure. All of these
improvements have been major factors in globalization and have generated further
interdependence of economic and cultural activities around the globe.

Though many scholars place the origins of globalization in modern times, others trace
its history long before the European Age of Discovery and voyages to the New World,
some even to the third millennium BC.Large-scale globalization began in the 1820s. In
the late 19th century and early 20th century, the connectivity of the world's economies
and cultures grew very quickly. The term globalization is recent, only establishing its
current meaning in the 1970s.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

2.1 Definition of Globalization

According to Wikipedia, Globalization or globalisation is the process of interaction

and integration among people, companies, and governments worldwide. As a complex and
multifaceted phenomenon, globalization is considered by some as a form of capitalist
expansion which entails the integration of local and national economies into a global,
unregulated market economy. Globalization has grown due to advances in transportation and
communication technology. With the increased global interactions comes the growth of
international trade, ideas, and culture. Globalization is primarily an economic process of
interaction and integration that's associated with social and cultural aspects. However,
conflicts and diplomacy are also large parts of the history of globalization, and modern
globalization.

According to the language, globalization is taken from the word globe / global, which
means the world. Whereas in terms, Globalization is the inclusion of all aspects of life in the
world. What is meant by all aspects of life, ranging from food, clothing, culture, law, politics
to communication and information media.

The meaning of the world is that humans as social beings (social beings) we cannot
reject the influence that comes from various parts of the world and because we cannot refuse
then as a nation with personality we must be selective in accepting all foreign influences.
Selective means being good at choosing what is good and what is not good, which is in
accordance with our culture and which is not in accordance with our culture, because not all
influences that come from outside are good. Therefore, it is necessary to have a strong mental
and self-order in society as a nation that has a selective personality in sorting out positive and
negative influences. A concrete example of globalization is when you want to watch the
English Premiere League abroad, you don't need to go all the way to England but you can just
look at it in Television media.

2.2 Characteristics Of Globalization

The following are some of the characteristics that indicate the increasingly clear
phenomenon of globalization in the present:

1. Changes in a constant and continue so as to facilitate various aspects of life. The

development of items such as mobile phones, satellite television, and the internet shows

Page 4
that global communication is happening so fast, while through mass movements such as
tourism allows us to feel many things from different cultures.

2. Economic markets and production in different countries become interdependent as a

result of growing international trade, increasing influence of multinational companies,
and the dominance of organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO).

3. Increasing cultural interaction through the development of mass media (especially

television, film, music, and international news and sports transmission). at this time, we
can consume and experience new ideas and experiences about things that cross a wide
variety of cultures, for example in the fields of fashion, literature and food.

4. Increased joint problems, for example in the environmental field, multinational crisis,
regional inflation and others.

2.3 Positive and Negative Effects of Globalization on Life

1. Politics
- Positive impact
a) The government is run openly (transparently).
b) Increase people's participation in government.
c) Encourage people's creativity so that it becomes an effective means of control and
oversight to oversee the government.

they have successfully implemented.

Page 5
a) The role of the community in maintaining security and order is reduced because it has
become the duty of the authorities.
b) People who take legal action will be charged with vigilante justice.
c) More and more parties will want to separate themselves from a country because they
are affected by cases such as international crime in other countries.

3. Economics
- Positive impact
a) Can expand the market to produce domestic goods abroad.
b) Increase work opportunities and increase foreign exchange.
c) Encourage people to compete in producing high quality products.
d) Facilitate obtaining additional capital, both from within and outside the country

- Negative impact
a) Some small businesses will be eliminated by businesses with large capital.
b) As a result of the existence of a free market, it can threaten the majority of domestic
products whose quality is far below that of foreign products.
c) Opening entry for foreign investment which also has the potential to dominate the
domestic economy which of course will worsen economic conditions.
d) Widening the gap between developed and developing country economies.
e) The rise of environmental pollution in the industrial field.
f) Replacement of production technology from manual to machine, thereby increasing
unemployment.

c) Damaging the morale of the nation due to lack of filtering of the culture that entered.
d) Fostering some bad lifestyle, such as; consumerism (excessive and unproductive
consumption), pragtism (likes to see the advantages and disadvantages, benefits and not),
hedonism (prioritizing the interests of the world only) and individualism (prioritizing
one's own dismissal).

Page 6
2.4 How to Anticipated the Negative side of Globalization

1. Politics
a) Embed positive, cooperative, empathetic and sympathetic characters from an early
age.

c) Teach and guide our future generations about ethics and morals and openness to
assume positive new things.
d) Strengthening the spiritual and patterned simple life but actively working to create
a beautiful life.

CHAPTER III

CONCLUSION
3.1 Conclusion
Globalization is a natural phenomenon that is sure to be experienced by every
nation in the world, both in developed societies, developing societies, transitional
societies, as well as those whose lives are still low.
In the global era, a society / country cannot isolate itself from the globalization
process. If a society / country isolates itself from globalization, they can be sure to be
crushed by the age and fall into an era of backwardness and ignorance.
Globalization contributes a large influence that covers various aspects of life,
both in economic, information and technology, culture, science and law.
Globalization also has positive and negative impacts on life in the fields of
politics, law, defense, security, economy, social and culture. One of the benefits of
globalization that is felt is the opening of business opportunities for people to market
their products abroad, while one of the negative impacts is the entry of some foreign
cultures that are very contrary to our country's culture.

3.2 Suggestion
We cannot oppose the current of globalization, but we also do not have to fully
follow. After knowing the various impacts of globalization, both positive and
negative, we are required to be selective in choosing culture or new things that come
from outside, so that we do not eliminate the culture that has long been embedded in
us.
