Importance of Report Writing
• Writing of report is the last step in a research study and
requires a set of skills

• Research report is considered a major component of the


research study for the research task remains incomplete till
the report has been presented and/or written.

• Properly designed and well conducted research study has


little value unless it is effectively communicated to others in
the form of report

Types of Reports

• There are many different formats for reporting research;


journal articles, technical research reports, monographs or
books, graduate theses or dissertations.

• Research is also reported orally at professional meetings,


seminars, symposia and workshops.

Structure and components of scientific reports

(As per Solapur University, Syllabus)

1. Introduction (History, Importance of Project Area, Problem


identification, Objective of the Project)

2. Literature Review

3. Design/ Experimentation/ Fabrication/ Production/ Actual


work carried out for the same

4. Observation/ Analysis/ Findings/Results

5. Discussion on Results and Conclusion

6. References

Layout of the Research Report, Different Steps in
Writing Report

1. Project report should be of 25 to 50 pages (More pages can be


used if needed)

2. For standardization of the project reports, following format


should be strictly followed.

Page size : A4
Top Margin : 1.00 Inches
Bottom Margin : 1.32 Inches
Left Margin : 1.5 Inches
Right Margin : 1.0 Inches
Para Text : Times New Roman 12 point font
Line Spacing : 1.5 Lines
Page Numbers : Right aligned at footer, font 12 point
Times New Roman
Headings : New Times Roman, 14 point, Boldface

Different Steps in Writing Report
The usual steps involved in writing report are:

(a) Logical analysis of the subject-matter;


(b) Preparation of the final outline;
(c) preparation of the rough draft;
(d) Rewriting and polishing;
(e) Preparation of the final bibliography;
(f) Writing the final draft.

Software tools (Word processing, latex etc.)

Microsoft Word:
• Microsoft Word or MS-WORD (often called Word) is
a word processing program that users can type with.

• It is made by the Microsoft. Its purpose is to allow users to


type, edit and save documents.

• Word can do Spelling & grammar check, word count (this also
counts letters and lines), Inserts pictures, equation, special
characters in documents, formatting layout, Choice of fonts,
inserting graphs, Tables, drawing figures, display synonyms of
words etc.

LaTex :

LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting tool designed for writing


technical and scientific documents. Although initially created for
creating medium to large technical and scientific documents, you
can use it for basically any publishing tasks.
