Introduction
After covering the session of A Value Chains Approach and Urban and Regional Development
we are ordered to make group discussion by forming 6 members and selecting title to analyze
value chine. As a group we decide to make a discussion on poultry value chine.
The main advantages of chicken value chain study are defining the needs and nature of
customers and their ability and desire to buy, scanning the business environment, gathering
needed information for decision-making, reducing risk, helping in production planning and
monitoring and controlling marketing
OBJECTIVE
Objectives of our group discussion is
To have common understanding about value chain
To investigate and analyze the value chain analysis of local poultry
Develop map of function and actors along local chicken and eggs value chain analysis.
Assess the role of different actors and service providers to the local chicken and egg
value chain development.
Analyze socio-economic, institutional and technological related factors that influence
local chicken and egg participation and value of sale along the value chains.
Analyze the possible Opportunity and constraints of local poultry value chain
development and analyze the local poultry value chains governance system.
To understand the potential contributions of the value chain approach in promoting urban
and regional development
Understand and explain the main aims of the value chain approach
Understand and explain the main stages in value chain analysis
Household based chicken production is commonly practiced. The chicken production is based on
indigenous chicken breeds characterized with low production, poor husbandry practices and high
flock death. It provides economic and social benefits to the community. There are also people
who engaged in poultry related activities such as input delivery, distribution, collection,
processing and marketing. Here having tangible and rigorous baseline data on the poultry value
chain analyses is very important for better understanding the chain actors and their roles,
identifying determinant factors that can influence the value chain and analyze the governance
system of the local chicken and eggs value chain.

Recommendations
Development policy and program intervention designed to enhance productivity through promoting
land management practices need to take into account the aforementioned variables with respect to the
type of innovation and producers preference. More specifically, based on our discussion the
following recommendations are forwarded:
flock size affect positively and highly significantly. This indicates that producers having more
number of poultry can produce more volume of chicken and egg and can have of better marketable
surplus. Perhaps this is because of the fact that producers having more poultry can supply more
poultry products to the market. Therefore, in order to promote the poultry value chain it should be
establishing good linkage strong service delivery system amongst the poultry value chain actors for
improving the value chain development
The discussion shows education has negative effect on the quantity of egg quantity sold. Indicating
relatively educated people have less preference to poultry business. Therefore, in order to promote
inclusive poultry business there is a need to modernized the existing traditional systems through
inculcation of value addition process at each junctions of the poultry value chain functions
