To check the earthing is provided or not?How to identify the neutral wire 

with the help of Digital Multimeter and test lamp. 

 
 
 
 

INTRODUCTION 

To prevent damage of electrical equipment and user’s safety from electric shock by 
equipment and appliance ( even home appliance) , the earthing is too much necessary . 

 
When we do the wiring of building first we make a proper earth by digging a pit and put 
the copper plate and salt in the pit and connect the copper plate by a earthing wire 
which is commonly bared or may be sleeved. This wire is go to the building with main 
wiring and connected to the centre top pin hole of every 5Amp ,15 Amp and each 
electrical socket to provide earthing. 

Note :- the earthing wire always connected the centre top pin of 
ac socket. 

TESTING TO KNOW THAT EARTHING IS PRESENT OR NOT.:​- 

Normally the voltage difference between earth and neutral is 2Volt ac to 6 Volt ac. 

Beyond this the the earthing is not proper . 

TO KNOW THE WHICH IS THE NEUTRAL WIRE:- 

The voltage label of earth to phase pin is 214 v to 220 v if there supply voltage is 220 volt 
50 hz. 

The voltage level of earth to neutral is 2 volt to 6 volt if supply voltage is 220 volt 50 hz  

REQUIREMENTS:- 

1. Series test lamp 

2. Digital multimeter 

PROCEDURE:- 

Testing from test lamp 

Connect the test lamp between the earth and one pin of the ac socket

Connect the test lamp between the earth and other pin of ac socket. 

Testing from digital multimeter 

1.connect the multimeter between earth and one hole of ac socket 

2. Connect the multimeter between earth and other hole of the ac socket. 

OBSERVATION:- 

Action taken  Observation   conclusion 

Connect the test lamp 

between the earth and  Lamp is glow  The wire is Phase 
one pin of the ac socket  

Connect the test lamp 

between the earth and  Lamp not glow  The wire is neutral 
other pin of ac socket. 

connect the multimeter  The wire is neutral 

between earth and one  If voltage is 2 to 6 volt   
 
hole of ac socket 

Connect the multimeter 

between earth and other  If voltage is 214 to 218  The wire is phase 
hole of the ac socket. 

RESULTS: 

After the observation we find that proper earthing can be identified with the help of 
DMM and with the help of testing Lamp ,we can not identify the accurate earthing only 
we can know the earthing point and neutral point with the help of testing Lamp.
