My College Experience

The past three months of my life have been action-packed. I did not think my initial year

of post-secondary would be so easy, but so hard at the same time. My current college experience

has been me, coping with a challenging workload. When I was in high school, and I thought of

post-secondary, I believed I would be drowning in assignments and two-hour lectures.

Regrettably, I was precise. I never realized how easy it was to miss an assignment. I would sit

there, at 10:53 pm, congratulating myself on the homework that I completed, when in reality I

only finished two out of the three. The reason I would lack so many assignments is solely that I

would overthink the number of assignments I have to do. That would result in me, stressing on

the assignments that I need to do and would forget about my assignment. Also, being in the long

lectures will cause me to drift off and not intake the information that my professor is talking

about. After lectures, I would have to go home to make notes so that I would be capable to

understand everything that was learnt about in class. I am still trying to get used to the very long

lectures in class. Hopefully, it will get easier in my second semester to stay awake and get

undistracted in between. A great Durham College resource that has helped me a lot is the

programs, academic advisor. Kim has been an amazing academic advisor. Any questions that I

had Kim answered them with confidence, which made me feel more reassured that I had the

correct guidance. Every time I felt like I was falling, Kim made sure that I was on my feet. Also
being in post-secondary has made me workout a lot more. The freshmen 15 has always haunted

me, so I was quick to use the resources that Durham provided. I have been to going to the gym

regularly so that I can maintain the weight. I have gained 4 pounds within 10 days, but that was

just because I stopped going for a while. I enjoy the gym also; at first, I was a little nervous when

I went to the gym because it was a new atmosphere. The gym I am used to going is at my high

school with people my age. The gym at Durham, there are many different people and it is quite

overwhelming. It took many times going with friends and by myself to start to comfortably go to

the gym and put in a good workout. Another great campus resource is the Campus Health Centre.

Every problem that I had with my health they were able to help with it immediately. The wait

times are relatively short, and the school insurance is great as well. The nurses, doctors, and staff

do a great job to make you feel comfortable and open with them. The last thing that has made my

college experience amazing is the connections that you can make while in school. The professors

are amazing teachers and the peers that I have met so far in my program are great. Durham has

done a great job at making my first semester great, and I hope that legacy can continue.
