CHAPTER I: THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

This chapter is made up of the background of the problem and questions that holds the

study. It also serves as the introduction to a broader conductivity of the process of overlooking and

data collection.

The intense growth of the usage of the internet, especially of social media based on its

statistical measures and illustrations, has affected the whole country. The Philippines has topped

the social media usage ranking worldwide (ABS-CBN News, 2019). The 21st century has paved

the way for technological and digital modernization it has been in. Social media is now the main

instrument of communication among people (Bareq, 2018). The world of social media is constantly

changing. It is disturbing to even think about in an alarming rate. Social media and the internet

have distributed an immense impact both on the good and bad side. This generation focuses on the

“likes” and so making them unhealthily attached to their virtual life (Hurley, 2019). Sadly, the

youth is drowning in the middle of the distraction caused by it and therefore, affecting their

academic performances. This colossal part of the internet pushed the education of the youth aside

instead of helping on the enhancement of it. Social media has brought negligence and has stolen

the attention of the scholars that are in need of depth and focus.

Education has been in the same pattern in the past decades. Teachers and students try to

adapt to the newness of the tools that are provided by technology (Mirgane, 2019). Social media,

as part of it, has both good and bad effects (Subrahmanyam and Greenfield, 2019). Some schools

prefer the use of it in their facilities. Some institutions ban it from their computer systems (Ahn,

2019).
Background of the Study

Education is a broad process of learning through values, practices, knowledge, and abilities

and is passed through learning as well (Rroij, 2019). It cannot be separated from human’s life

especially in the present times. Education is considered a bridge to the future. Technology is said

to be one of the factors that give impact to the education system of a country (Johan, 2014). The

riddance of any sort of distraction is an absolute must. One of the most active hindrance to studying

is the presence of social media and its sites. Social networking is the process of engagement in

communication while social sites are the tool in such. In a conducted study, it was discovered that

an average teenager spends between one to more than six hours daily on social networking sites

(Hashem, 2015). In other words, social media is visually and mentally addictive. It creates great

distraction for students; and thus, preventing them to focus on their academics. The attention of

young scholars shall remain mostly on the side of studying and intellectually performing.

The internet has provided both the beneficial and the destructive. Social media has become

a small but unending world to the youth. One visible effect is the addiction to “likes” and fame

that were subsequently brought by the effects of using social media (Hurley, 2019). Technology

may have the best benefits but also can be the biggest distraction especially to the education of the

youth. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine conducted a study and found out that the

more time teenagers use social sites, the more they encounter problems (psycom.net, 2019).

The dominance of social media usage in the 21st century has become massive and too wide

to even inhibit (Breen, 2015). Solutions to such conflict are on a high demand. Students tend to

consume their time on something they usually enjoy and find entertainment due to the ongoing

consumption of distress. In response, the development of this proposed application is being

implemented in its most versatile way possible.

Statement of the Problem

The statement of the problem contains the discussion about the subject matter of the study

(Canakis, 2014). It encompasses the breaking down of the issues to be improved upon all

throughout the process. This part also contains the discussion of other related concerns that have

helped in the establishment of ideas involved in the study.

This study aims to answer the following research questions:

1. What are the credentials and demographic information of the selected Grade 12 STEM

students of STI College Lucena, AY 2019-2020 in terms of:

1.1 Name

1.2 Age

1.3 Sex

2. What is the level of acceptability of the social-site-blocking application BLOCUS in terms

of:

2.1 Features

2.2 Specifications

2.3 Design

2.4 Interface

3. What is/are the implication/s that the research study has regarding the acceptability of the

application on selected Grade 12 STEM students of STI College Lucena, AY 2019-2020?

Hypothesis

BLOCUS, a social-networking-site-blocking application, will receive a high level of

acceptability on selected Grade 12 STEM students of STI College Lucena, AY 2019-2020.

Significance of the Study

This part determines who benefits from the study and how the specific respondents will

benefit from its findings (topnotcher.ph, 2018).

The results of the study will be of great benefit to the following:

Grade 12 STEM Students of STI College Lucena. The results will help propose a way to

get rid of distractions brought by the use of social media and improve academic performance

through the developed application. The program will also let them practice reduced usage of social

media sites and applications.

Other scholars. The results of the study will be able to benefit other scholars such as

unnecessary access to social sites.

Education system. The results of the conducted study will allow more competencies in the

field of education and will diminish the issue of unproductivity on students by disabling social

websites on electronic devices to prevent distractions from school works and concerns and poor

academic performances.

Future researchers. This study will be able to help upcoming researchers with the help of

the overall background. Its findings will also be of great help in terms of analysis and reference.

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on the acceptability of BLOCUS to selected Grade 12 STEM students

of STI College Lucena, AY 2019-2020. The data collection will involve the Grade 12 Science,

Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics students of STI College Lucena. The study would be

done through the utilization of questionnaires to the respondents as a way of gathering data.

Through this form of data collection, the analysis of responses would be used to complete the

objectives and answer the stated research questions. This study does not encompass
