CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Every person must have their own preferences, of the things that are liked there must
be more or the most preferred. Example Si Reno Loves in sports, but from several sports there
is one that he prefers. In the discussion this time we will talk about something that is related to
what I have already mentioned above, namely about the expression more like. In English such
expressions are called Preferences. In this paper we will discuss in detail about the three
discussions above, because the use of these three terms has an important role in this lesson.

The other word denotes something different. Another refers to something that is
additional, while others refers to another object (plural) when we do not mention the object.
Other words, another, and others can also be interpreted as: other or other.

Prefer, like and woul rother is something to express what we like, prefer to talk or ask questions.
Other refers to something different

Preferences can be used when someone is going to give a suggestion, offer something
or ask someone else's opinion on what should (better) be done. Sometimes people ask for your
opinion and you can give or express your choices. While on the other hand sometimes offer
something to you and you have to express your choices politely if you do not want to do
something that has been offered, or maybe prefer to do something else.

Simply put Preference is a form of statement / expression that states the preference
(Preferences). Used to indicate a person's preference for something that can be an object,
person, place, etc.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

A. Definition of Preferences

Preference is a form of statement that expresses feelings more like than others. In Indonesian,
this expression is not so difficult, where we simply say "Prefer from", but in English, there are
several forms that can be used to state the above statement.

B. Formulas, Types and Examples of Preferences

1. Prefer

Formula:

• Subject + Prefer + to infinitive

• Subject + Prefer + Nouns + to + Nouns

• Subject + Prefer + Gerund + to + Gerund

Example:

• They prefer to go now

• My mother prefers lemon to orange

• She prefers watching TV to listen to the radio

2. Would Rather

Formula:

• Subject + would rather + verb form I (without to-infinitives)

• Subject + would rather + Infinitives + than + Infinitives

• Subject + would rather + Infinitives + Noun + than + Inf + Noun

• Subject + would rather + someone + Form II

Example:

• I would rather study now

5
• She would rather stay home than go shopping

• We'd rather play cards than play ball

• I'd rather you went now

3. Would Prefer to

Formula:

• Subject + Would Prefer to + infinitive + rather than + inf

• Subject + would Prefer to + infinitives + Nouns + rather than + infinitives + Nouns

Example:

• They would prefer to sing rather than dance

• You'd prefer to play ball rather than take a sleep

4. Like

Formula:

• Subject + Like + Nouns / Gerunds

• Subject + like + gerunds + better than + gerund

• Subject + like + noun + better than + noun

Example:

• I like singing a song

• She likes singing a song better than playing a guitar

• They like coffee better than tea

5. Had Better

Formula:

• Subject + had better + infinitive

• Subject + had better + not + infinitive

Example:

6
• You had better study hard

• You had better not work on Sundays

6. It's time

Formula:

• It's time + to infinitives

• It's time + Subject + Past form

Example:

• It's time to get up

• It's time you went away

7. Instead of

Instead of we use instead of: to, than, better than, rather than

Formula:

• Instead of + Gerund / Nouns

Example:

• I prefer staying home instead of going out

• They would rather eat their lunch instead of work

• I woud prefer to invite them instead of him

• He likes me instead of him

C. Use of Preferences

We often use words like: "prefer, would prefer, would rather" to ask about preferences.

Example:

"I prefer living with my uncle". (I prefer to live with my uncle)

"Would you prefer to watch a movie or go to a mall"? (Do you prefer watching a movie or
going to the mall?)

7
The example sentence above has a slightly different meaning, this is the reason why English
learners often experience difficulties. Please note the differences in using preferences below:

1. Difference in Meaning:

We tend to use the word "prefer" to talk about likes, dislikes, and what we want,

example:

"He prefers reading a magazine". (He prefers reading magazines)

"I prefer going to the beach than going to a swimming pool". (I'd rather go to the beach than
go to the swimming pool)

As for the use of the words "would prefer" and "would rather", be used more specifically, for
example:

"I would prefer to see him personally." (I'd rather meet him in person)

"I would rather go home now." (I better go home now)

2. Differences in verb form:

"I prefer living in a town". (Followed by gerund, using the suffix "-ing")

"I would prefer to be told the truth." (Followed by the infinitive, using "to + Verb 1")

"Would you rather stay at an apartment"? (Followed by the basic form of verb / verb 1 without
"to")

3. Differences in the use of prepositions to make choices:

"Prefer" and "would prefer" followed by the preposition "to", for example:

"I prefer living in a town to live in the village".

"I would rather be alone to be with the wrong person"

B. Suggestion

Similarly, we can describe the material that is the subject of this proposal, of
course, there are still many shortcomings and weaknesses, because they lack the
knowledge and the lack of reference or the reference has to do with the title of this
proposal. Author much hope dear readers, providing constructive criticism
