From the global call center destination it used to be in late 90's Indian IT industry has come
a long way.

With step by step transition from low-skilled sourcing through call centres to BPOs, then to
IT services and KPOs, and then to high skilled IT consulting and research work, Indian IT
industry has been on a swift move.

Currently, the industry has comfortably embraced latest IT/technological innovations in the
field of -

Cloud/Virtual storage services

Internet of Things( IoT)

Big data and Analytics

Hadoop

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (At nascent stage by some start-ups)

Enterprise software with Big data analysis and reporting capabilities like SAP Hana

Android and iOS based mobile product/app development

Software products

Traditionally Indian IT industry has not been credited with industry/sector

specific strong software products, but that is changing now rapidly. NASSCOM
suggested that software products alone would clock $11 bn revenue in 2015-16

Among the mentioned technologies, VR and AR have not been adopted at a big scale and
are aterritory of a few niche star-ups, while almost all big IT companies have developed

There is no trending technology in India. there are trending technologies globally to which
India plays catch up game all the time. So first suggestion - follow what’s going on around
the world.

If you just go by what the CNN, BBC, TECHCRUNCH, your twitter feed, your facebook feed -
you will think Artificial intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Internet of things
is the future. It may be. But again it depends on why are you looking for the trends? Are you
looking for what will happen in the future? Then take a field and start researching. Write a
line of code and see. Build something small. Talk to people who are already building
something. If the trends do materialize you are in an amazing position. If it does not, then
you know what all sources are crap and what it takes for something to be a trend.

If you are looking to get a job, go to job boards and linkedin. See which job is hot? Add few
recruiters to your list in linked in and ask them what is the hottest opporutunity out there.
Take a course from coursera or udacity and build something as a self project. Go and talk to
startups who are working in the area or have the requirement for the job and show what you
have built. If things work out you can start doing this as a full time job. Else you know what
it takes to get a job on this technology.

Either way you become more wise than people who just look on to mainstream media for
trends or listening to people with opinions.

Mobile will get bigger and more diverse. And it doesn’t just mean the rising number of
smartphone users, but also the host of other reasons behind this growth.

Firstly, the growing number of E-commerce startups in India. Currently, India is the third-
largest start up country after USA and UK. And this e-commerce system is fueling the
growth of business around the mobile eco system as more and more people are using their
mobiles for shopping and other transactions. Which indicates that more and more people
are searching for products and services online, and making payments from their mobile
phones which will indeed drive a surge of mobile applications and mobile payment
gateways. The adoption rate for both mobile apps and mobile wallet will increase
significantly in 2016, compared to last year.

India’s e-commerce revenue can hit $38 Billion this year and industry leaders believe that
m-commerce (mobile commerce) could contribute up to 70% of the total revenue. It’s a
classic example of need-gap fulfilment. Recently, Union Government of India, has launched
four mobile health (m-Health) services by the name of Kilkari, Mobile Academy, M-
Cessation and TB Missed Call initiative. Mobile apps and services are also coming up in
regional languages. Mobile is not only growing, but also cascading into creating native
businesses in different sectors.

Smart cities technologies will pick up. Even though the first batch of 20 smart cities has
not been announced yet, one can easily predict that technology like IoT (Internet of Things)
will play a crucial role in this initiative.

WebNMS has already showcased its unified IoT Platform during the India Electronics Week,
held in Bangalore this year. Cisco’s Bangalore campus is a working prototype of a real smart
city, where everything and everyone is connected through IoT. In fact, Cisco has already a
solution by the name of “The Internet of Everything for Cities, that aims to connect people,
process, data, and things to improve the livability of cities and communities. The key point
here is that with IoT, devices can gather data, analyze and process it, and then stream
valuable inputs to the users for decision-making. It can be as simple as finding parking
space or street lights going off when there is no traffic.

With Government of India planning to build IoT industry worth USD 15 Billion in the next 6
years and the first phase of Kochi smart city all set to be inaugurated in February, 2016 – the
ball is already rolling for IoT technology in India.

Both companies and government will take cyber security more seriously. And this will
Search for questions, people, and topics
not be limited to installing or deploying solutions for preventing data breaches or denying Sign In
unauthorized access. But adopting a more pro-active security policy that extends beyond
people and their personal identity, as increasing interconnected-devices like smartphones
and tablets accessing multitudes of applications and services calls for more personalized
and pervasive security measures.

Whether it is defining protocols for NAC (Network Access Control, encrypting VPN (Virtual
Private Network) for authorized users, or issuing organizational devices with password
protection. And the focus will be more on end-point security.

At the government level, cyber threat will be considered as a top-priority as there are
manifold attacks to encounter: social media for anti-national activities, protecting critical
government information, inspecting economic frauds, and cyber warfare from both hostile
countries and non-state actors.

For instance, recently, the Defence Ministry of India has restricted use of Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth-enabled services in the South Block of the Capital city, New Delhi as a strong
security measure. The Indian state of Karnataka is introducing cyber-security courses in its
state universities. The trend is going to catch up with other states of India as well.

Virtualization and Cloud will rule the roost. In virtualization, OpenStack solution will be
a game changer in the 2016. For those who are new to the term, OpenStack is an open cloud
operating system that allows IT to manage, compute, storage and networking in their data
center. On one hand, it helps companies to improve their resource utilization, and on the
other hand, it cut costs and enhances flexibility.

The rising demands of graphic-rich applications, thanks to mobility, implicates datacenters

will be tweaked to host and run them with virtual machines. As a result, most of the Indian
IT services company will be working on intelligent data center in 2016.

As far as cloud is concerned, Gartner made an interesting India-specific projection some

years ago, “In India, cloud services revenue is projected to have a five-year projected
compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33.2 percent from 2012 through 2017 across all
segments of the cloud computing market”. Cut to 2016: we can already see how companies
are looking for cloud solutions that can help them to manage their IT resources easily and
effectively, and maximize Returns on Investment. More and more companies will adopt
cloud not only as a cost saving tool, but also as a robust platform to increase IT
responsiveness.

Web-Scale IT is the future reality. Today, we are in the era of digital business. Companies
which can respond quickly to customer demands will flourish and those who can’t will
perish. It’s as simple as that.

The traditional approach and working model of old IT enterprise with long SDLC (Software
Development Life Cycle), slows back-office applications, wherein data is run in batches and
the limitations of over-distributed RDBMS (Relational Database Management System)
which doesn’t serve the speed, flexibility, agility and scalability for today’s digital customers
who demands everything in real-time. Companies have started to realize that with
traditional IT architecture they will struggle with complexities, right from procuring IT
infrastructure to deploying it, from managing to scaling, and from cost management to
business development. That is where Web-Scale comes into the picture. Since Web-Scale IT
is software-defined, it becomes easy for companies to add new capabilities without
hardware upgrades. Further, infrastructure can be defined for different business
applications with speed and resilience and enterprises can set high fault tolerance.
