Grade: Grade 2 Math Lesson Title: Ordinal Numbers Follow-Up Center Lesson Duration (mins): 15

Overview of lesson
This mini follow-up lesson has been to confirm understanding of ordinal numbers up to tenth with grade 2 students as
a directed center activity. The focus of this lesson is to ensure students understand order and position of objects as
well as to start recognizing ordinal number words. As a center activity, students will have small whiteboards and a
marker, and will do a question and answer (quiz-like interaction) with the teacher. As an alternative, the teacher may
line colored shapes into a line and ask students to identify which colour or shape is in a particular position. Being in
their small center groups will allow them to ask questions and for the teacher to gauge their knowledge of ordinal
numbers. By the end of the center activity, students should have a firmer understanding of ordinal numbers.
Alberta Program of Study
GLO /GLE SLO/SLE
• Number: Develop number sense. • 3: Describe order or relative position, using ordinal
numbers (up to tenth).

Critical Questions
Lesson Guiding Questions:
• What does it mean for an object to be first?
• What does it mean for an object to be second?
• What does it mean for an object to be third?
• What does it mean for an object to be fourth?
• What does it mean for an object to be fifth?
• What does it mean for an object to be sixth?
• What does it mean for an object to be seventh?
• What does it mean for an object to be eighth?
• What does it mean for an object to be ninth?
• What does it mean for an object to be tenth?

Learning Objectives
• Students will use numbers to describe relative position using ordinal numbers.
• Students will represent numbers in multiple ways using ordinal numbers.
• Students will demonstrate their understanding of ordinal numbers through a variety of activities.

Lesson Procedures
Introduction (4 min):

1
Expectations for Learning and Behavior (1 min):
• Remind students that throughout their time at this center activity they need to raise their hand if they want to
answer a question unless the teacher calls on them specifically
• Remind students that they should not be talking while other students are answering questions
Review (2 min):
• Students will be given a reminder on what ordinal numbers are and how they work.
Transition (1 min):
• Following the giving of expectations, students will each be given a whiteboard, a marker, and an eraser as well
as instructions to wait until everyone is ready.

Body (8 min):
Identify Teaching Strategies:
1. Students will be given their whiteboards and asked to wait for • Direct instruction
the first question to answer. • Interactive instruction
2. As students show that they understand the concept of ordinal • Experiential learning
numbers with whiteboards, the teacher can switch up the
activity to include the manipulation of coloured shape blocks. Assessments
3. When using shape blocks, students will be asked questions
about which shape or which colour is in a particular position Formative:
to help reinforce the idea of ordinal numbers. • Formative assessments for this
lesson include observations and
whiteboard responses. Observation
will be used during the review of
ordinal numbers. Whiteboard
responses will be used to further
gauge the understanding level of
students.

Summative Assessment:
• There is no summative assessment
for this lesson.

Differentiation
With this being a center activity, differentiations can be made for the ability and temperament of the group at that
given time. Some sample differentiations include:
• Starting with the shapes and colours activity (easier)
• Having students just write the number form of the ordinal number (easier)
• Having students just write the written form of the ordinal number (harder)
• Having students draw or name the shape in that position (harder)

Consolidating and Closure (3 min):

Clean-up (1 min):
• Students will be asked to wipe their whiteboards and place them in a pile so that they are ready for the next
group
Review (2 min):
• Students will be asked some questions by the teacher to help review the overall concept of ordinal numbers.
