Throughout the course of the semester, I have learned a lot from this class. My skills

in reading, writing, giving and receiving feedback, and preparing multiple drafts have been

improved drastically. Prior to this class, I did not know the definition of “Rhetoric” and now

I understand it fully well and even completed a rhetorical analysis. “Logos, Ethos, Pathos and

Kairos” would have sounded like nonsense to me just a few months ago, but now I can

identify them in any form of persuasive literature. As the class went on, I also learned about a

variety of topics in order to broaden my view of the world. Two specifically were the topics

of my own writing pieces; the issue of child separation at the US-Mexico border and the

controversy over implementing Universal Health Care in the United States. Again, two topics

that I had very limited knowledge about prior to this class, and now I am confident that I

could argue about either one of those topics. A very challenging part of this class for me was

the original narrative composition. I had to recall incidences that I have tried very hard to

forget, and write about them in detail. Even though it was very difficult to do so, I now have

gained a better skill of being able to talk about things I do not want to talk about, and to share

my experiences with others. With this being said, I think the personal narrative composition

helped me the most, because I have been struggling to tell that story since it happened. The

other two major assignments were very helpful as well. I gained a sense of how to analyze
between the lines, and look at the deeper meaning about the motivation behind why a writer

or speaker is talking about an issue, and who their intended audience is. It also taught me to

make sure an author/speaker is a credible source before listening to what they have to say.

Lastly, the multimodal essay also helped me tremendously. I learned how to gain ideas and

opinions from various different sources, and to gain my own opinion on an issue that is

present in our society today. In addition, also furthering my grasp of rhetorical analysis by

analyzing different kinds of writing.

My major take away from this course was to broaden my horizons. I need to open my

eyes to more of the issues in society today, and pay more attention to my surroundings. I

have learned to dig deeper into projects, and continue to pursue, even if it is difficult for me.

I need to step out of my comfort zone, and continue to learn and grow by involving myself in

new experiences. Not only has my writing, analyzing and reading improved, but also my

outlook on the world.

My advice for someone who is coming into this class next semester would be to not

be afraid to be outside your comfort zone. Do not pick a topic that you know well for your

composition, pick a topic that you know nothing about and learn something new. Open your

eyes to new experiences and try to view the world from other people's viewpoints, not just

your own. Lastly to keep an open mind, for the best lessons to be learned could occur when

you least expect it.

Thank you so much for a great semester Professor Ferrara!
