Major Project #2: Self Evaluation Review

It has been over a year since I have started working for Wayback Burgers. During my

time at the restaurant, I have learned much about myself, and have learned many skills. In this

self-evaluation review, I hope to be able to show to you what I feel were my biggest

accomplishments, as well as what I need to improve on for the future.

Accomplishments

Versatility

Since I have started working here, I have learned many of the restaurant’s stations: expo,

food prep, and cashier. In addition, I have learned many of the things to do when there are not

many customers in the restaurant: washing dishes, cleaning tables, sweeping the floors, and

stocking behind the counter. My versatility is something that is appreciated by my co-workers

and my managers because I can fill many roles on the fly. Dallas, one of the managers,

constantly remarks to me that the days we both work together are easier because I am able to

work quickly and can help him at any station when needed.

Work Ethic
My work ethic is something I am quite proud of and is something many of the managers

have noticed and appreciate. Since I have started working at the restaurant over a year ago, I only

missed two days due to extreme weather during the winter. I always show up on time in the

morning to do morning prep. In a conversation with Dallas and Rita, one of my other managers,

both brought up how they like my work ethic with morning prep: working quickly and preparing

enough food to last the entire day. After morning prep is done, I work quickly on whatever

station I am on. And when there are no customers in the restaurant, I am usually the person who

washes the plates and containers so they do not pile up as the day goes on. Mike, the main

manager of the restaurant, repeatedly thanks me when I do things that are not asked of me.

Customer Service

Customer service is important in the food service industry because our main goal is to

cater to customers. I believe it is something I excel at. Many customers have spoken to Mike,

speaking kind words about me. They have said that I am friendly, have a good sense of humor,

and that I am attentive when taking their orders. In addition, if the customer is a regular of the

restaurant, I will try to remember their names to make them feel more welcome when I interact

with them.

Areas I Have Improved On

Social Skills

One of my biggest problems is that I am extremely shy. When it comes to meeting new

people, I have a tough time opening up to them and feeling comfortable around them. My co-

workers, who were working around the time I started to work at the restaurant, mentioned they

were shocked at how quiet I was. However, after spending time getting to know them and feeling

comfortable in my roles at the restaurant, I have become more outgoing with everyone. My

improving social skills allow me to communicate better with my managers and my co-workers,

and also help improve my customer service.

Multi-Tasking

When I first began working at the restaurant, I was only able to perform simple tasks,

such as expo. Trying to do more would overwhelm me, and I would end up making mistakes or

forgetting to do something. The job can be hectic at times, as you have to juggle many things at

once. However, the longer I worked at the restaurant, the better I have become with multi-

tasking. Now, I am able to multi-task most of the stations. The most common things I multi-task

are prep and expo, cashier and milkshakes, and dishwashing and expo.

What I can Improve On

Not Becoming Overwhelmed

One area I can improve on is not becoming overwhelmed in times of stress. The

restaurant during the lunch or dinner rush can be extremely hectic. Having to prep dozens of

orders correctly in a short amount of time is stressful. During these times, I tend to panic

internally, constantly worrying when I fall behind, or if I mess up an order. I can improve on this

by learning to be in the present moment and not getting trapped in those negative emotions. By

dwelling on those emotions, I will be more likely to make a mistake and fall behind. Another

thing I can do is attempt to judge the situation better. When I see the dozens of burger buns on

the prep board, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sight. By calming down and assessing which

buns are going to which order, it will be easier for me to focus the immediate order rather than

every order.

Other Stations

Another area I can improve on is learning the remaining stations I have little experience

with. The last two stations I need more practice on are fries and grill. These two are the hardest

stations to learn for me, since I tend to get overwhelmed when lots of orders start to come in. I

also tend to panic since I feel an enormous amount of pressure not to mess up, since messing up

a burger or a batch of fries can set every station back by a few minutes. Because of those

negative experiences, I put off learning how to do them. I can improve on this by biting the bullet

and asking my managers for more practice. I must also learn to be more willing to make

mistakes, since that comes with learning.

Where Do I see Myself in the Future?

As for my future with this company, I can see myself becoming a manager of the

restaurant. Doing so would allow me to gain much-needed experience in running a business,

which I need for my dream of owning my own business. However, in order to become a

manager, I will need to improve my skills on the last two stations, as well as continue to improve

my social skills to help build connections for the restaurant.
