Topic: Addition
Objectives: Students will be able to understand place value when adding multi-digit
numbers.
Assessment Plan: Check for understanding throughout by asking them to explain how
they are solving addition problems. There will be a worksheet for them to complete
during independent practice where they will choose the strategy they would like to use
to solve addition problems.
Materials Needed:
- Unifix Cubes
- Rummikub tiles
- Base 10 blocks
- Whiteboards
- Whiteboard markers
- Whiteboard erasers
Anticipatory Set:
- We will have 2 new students pick an item from the box that represents our
interests and we will explain them.
Instructional Inputs:
- “Materials are for learning and should be used to help you understand place
value.”
- “Raise your hand when you have questions or want to make a comment.”
- “Listen to your peers when they are talking.”
- Give them a 2 digit number and ask them what each number represents.
- If they understand, give them a 3 digit number and ask them to explain what
each number represents.
Modeling:
- Explain to the students that we can use different strategies to understand place
value when solving addition problems.
- “We can use unifix cubes, base 10 blocks, or our whiteboards to represent
addition problems.”
- “Let’s use the unifix cubes to solve the problem: 15 + 28” (model by combining 10
blocks for a 10 and breaking them apart for ones)
- “Let’s use the whiteboards to solve the problem: 46 + 37” (model by using the
carry method, the drawing method (square for 100s, line for 10s, and dot for 1s),
and the method of breaking numbers up into their place value)
- “What strategies do you use to solve addition problems?”
Guided Practice:
- Divide the group into 2. Annie will practice solving 2- and 3-digit addition
problems on the whiteboard with one group while Mikaela practices solving
addition problems using the unifix cubes. We will switch after 10 minutes.
- Numbers for the problems will be picked by the students from the Rummikub tiles
in a bag.
- We will check for understanding by asking the students to explain how they are
solving the addition problem and observing their work.
Independent practice/application:
- Students can choose which strategy they want to use to solve one 2-digit
addition problem and one 3-digit problem on a worksheet:
- 36 + 47 =
- 188 + 351 =
Closure:
- Students will be able to share what their favorite strategy is and why.
- Ask the students when they use addition outside of school.
