General Art: Component 10 (iii) MEDIA AND TECHNIQUES: Students will use media and techniques, with

Social Studies: Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how
geography, culture, language, heritage, economics and resources shape and change Canada’s

Specific Art: Use simple clay modelling techniques of rolling, pinching, adding, pressing, making coils,

Outcomes:
Social Studies: 2.1.4 investigate the economic characteristics of communities in Canada by
exploring and reflecting upon the following questions for inquiry:
- What kinds of natural resources exist in the communities (e.g., fishing, agriculture,
mining)? (ER, LPP)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
1. Be able to understand the significance of lobster fishing to daily life in Meteghan by creating a lobster trap
and having a class discussion
2. Be able to demonstrate their abilities to follow instruction as well as use simple clay modeling techniques to
create their lobster trap art
ASSESSMENTS

Introduction Time

Attention Grabber Who remembers what we talked about yesterday in Meteghan?


(looking for lobster fishing)

Transition to Body Today we are going to be making our own lobster traps and
lobsters for art today!

Body Time

Learning Activity #1 Show video of lobster fishing so they remember what they look
like

Teacher Notes: - Ask what kinds of things we see (fisherman, cage, lobster)
Assessments/ - Show them the sample lobster trap and say we are going to
Differentiation make our own lobster traps

Learning Activity #2 Making the traps


Teacher Notes: - Have glue, popsicle sticks, bottom piece, red papers, and
Assessments/ modeling clay ready to go
Differentiation - Discuss the steps slowly and ask individual students if they
remember each step
 First, have students glue popsicle sticks to a piece of
cardboard and let dry. Next show red papers and
demonstrate gluing popsicle sticks to the paper 30 minutes
(while glue dries, they can create their lobsters),
once the red strip dries bring to the teacher and not
glue to the bottom piece. Lastly, have them
carefully place their lobster in the trap.
- After going through the instructions to a great extent have a
picture by picture demonstration on the board so that if they
need a reminder it will be on the board

Assessments/ - Have the students done early finish coloring/drawing their
Differentiation pictures from yesterday’s class

Closure Time

Consolidation of Have a short discussion about the significance of lobster fishing


Learning: in Meteghan and why it might be important when learning about
the community

- I want the students to be able to create their own lobster
traps to consolidate their learning of daily life and
occupations within Meteghan
2.) How will I know if they achieved the outcome?
- I will know if they complete their lobster traps by the end of
the lesson
3.) What will I do if they do not reach the outcome?
- If they do not finish their lobster traps, then they will have
class time on Monday to finish if necessary
