CRACK WIDTH CALCULATION (BS 8110)

Reference: Moesley page 138-140

Project:
Location:

Input:

Characteristic strengths of concrete fcu = 35 N/mm2

Characteristic strengths of steel fy = 460 N/mm2
Modulus of elasticity of steel Es = 200 kN/mm2
Modulus of elasticity of concrete (Refer Table 1.1) Ec = 27 kN/mm2

Beam width bb = 1000 mm

Beam height hb = 250 mm
No. of tension Rebar nbar= 8
Diameter of tension rebar dbar= 10 mm
Area of steel As = 628 mm2

Minimum cover to tension reinfrocement cmin = 50 mm

Side cover to corner tension reinforcement cside= 50 mm
Distance to centroid of tension reinforcement d= 195 mm

Applied Service Moment M= 20 kNm

Output:
1. The analysis of cracked section using half of the instanteneous value of Ec to allow for creep effect
Ec = 13.5 kN/mm2
2. The neutral axis position is given by 0.5 b x^2 + Es. As/ Ec x - Es.As.d/ Ec = 0
0.5 b = 500.00
Es. As/Ec = 9308.42
-Es.As.d/Ec = -1815142.42
The neutral axis position x= 51.66 mm

3. The stress in tension rebar fs = M/ ((d - x/3) As ) = 179.05 N/mm2

4. Overall extension per unit length at depth y below neutral axis
e1 = y/ (d-x) fs/ Es = 6.245439E-06 y

Check maximum crack width at 2 locations:

Point 1: at the soffit corner of the beam
Point 2: at equidistance between neutral axis and tension reinforcement

2 71.67 85.34 123.33 0.000448 0.0001845572 0.035

Note: acr= straight clear distance between rebar and point

a' = the distance from compressive face to the point at which crack is calculated
bt= the width of section at centroid of tensile steel

5. Maximum crack width wmax = 0.09 mm
