Love and Logic

Mini Leadership Lesson #2

Michael Leapley
Philosophy of Discipline

Consider this:

● If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.

● If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach.
● If a child doesn’t know how to write, we teach.

If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we _______.

Philosophy of Discipline (Cont.)

My goal for discipline:

I want my students to learn responsible behavior so that they can honor

God, their parents, and other authorities (Exodus 20:3,12).

By teaching my students that their actions have consequences, I can better

prepare them to make intelligent choices about those actions in the future.

Discipline must be done in a loving way and a logical manner.

Discipline Strategy

Setting Limits with Enforceable Statements

Strategy is dictated by several core beliefs:

1. I only make statements that I can enforce and control.

2. I can only control myself and my actions.
3. I cannot force students to do as I ask or what I say: only encourage them.
4. Therefore, I tell the students what I will do.
Turn Your Word Into Gold

Not Enforceable Enforceable

Please be quiet. It’s time to begin. I’ll be glad to start as soon as you
show me that you are ready.

Keep your hands to yourself. You are welcome to stay with us

as long as you and others are not
being bothered.

Don’t talk to me in that tone of I’ll listen as soon as your voice is

voice! as calm as mine.
Put It Into Practice!

Case Study:

“It is the beginning of your class and a number of students have not yet taken
their seats. They are standing up and talking to each other. The passing period
is over and your class needs to start.”

How do you respond with an enforceable statement(s)?

Act it out!
Final Thoughts

● Discipline is not a dirty word, nor does it always entail punishment!

● In general, use love and logic in your classroom.
● Specifically, use love and logic by setting limits with enforceable
statements.
● Explore the possibilities!
