The Problem

Introduction

Anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being is a stress. Stress is

most undermined syndrome in our society that is neglected since the element of mental

health is associated with it. Stress is primarily a physical response and is defined as a

condition typically characterized by the symptoms of mental and physical tension or

strain, as depression or hypertension, which can result from a reaction to a situation in

which a person feels threatened or pressured or sometimes both. Students are

subjected to different kinds of stressors, such as the pressure of academics with an

obligation to succeed, an uncertain future and difficulties of integrating into the system.

The students also face social, emotional, physical and family problems which may affect

their learning ability and academic performance.

Stress is a syndrome that can lead us into depression, anxiety. It is a feeling that

people have when they are overloaded and struggling to cope with demands. It is also a

common problem that almost all of us experience that, at some point in our lives.

Students nowadays are very aware in this kind of illness. Most of the students

can’t fight their stress, they feel so uncomfortable, they can’t focus on doing something,

they over think too much, that’s why it affects on their academic performance. Their

stress starts from their school, where they put pressure on their self that they have

heavily felt, like maintaining their good grades, completing their school years, passing

their projects on time, etc.

In line with this, the researchers will investigate what are the effects of the

stress on the Grade 12 students. This involved deep reflections of the students’

experiences and how they were able to cope it up.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know what are the effects of stress on the academic

performance of Grade 12 students of Norala National High School at the Municipality of

Norala, Province of South Cotabato.

Specifically, this study aimed to answer the following questions:

1.) What are the different kinds of stressors that students experiences?

2.) How does stress affects the academic performance of the students?

3.) What coping mechanisms do students apply to conquer stress?

4.) What are the effects of stress on the students?

Null Hypothesis

1.) The researchers can’t identify the kinds of stressors that students experience.

2.) The researchers can’t find the result of how stress affects the academic performance

of the students.
3.) The coping mechanisms applied by the students to conquer stress can’t be

determined by the researchers.

4.) The researchers didn’t know what are the effects of stress to the students.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will identify the effects of stress to the students’ academic

performance and it will be beneficial to the following:

To the students, the result of this study will serve as a guide to a concept about

how to cope up with stress and what are its effects which can help them overcome

depression and anxiety.

To the teachers, this study will serve as inkling to the teachers on how to have

good teaching techniques for the students and to them to be less stressed and for they

can perform well in their academic performances.

To the parents, this study will be beneficial for it will serve as an eye-opener to the

parents/guardians that their son/daughter might experience various kinds of stress, and

that may serve as hindrance not only to their study but also in their everyday activities.

In that case they can help their son/daughter to stabilize their own emotional, mental as

well as physical well-being.

To the administrators, this study can be beneficial to this institution for it can give a

hint on how to deal with stress, and in that case they may give or organize activities that

may reduce stress to both students and teachers of NNHS.

Scope and Delimitations

This study will be limited only to the Grade 12 students of Norala National High

School in dealing with stress problems with regards of their academic performance. The

researchers will conduct a survey on Norala National High School Campus (NNHS) on

the month of February, 2020.

Definition of Terms

The following important terms are defined theoretically and or operationally:

Academic Performance. Academic Performance is the performance of the

students in 1st to 2nd semester and term examination is considered as academic

performance. The students’ marks on final examination were obtained from the

educational institution or students’ marks sheet. The educational institution considers

student’s marks based on the percentage they have scored in the semester and term

examination, where a score of 70% and above are considered distinction, 50% and

below are considered as pass class. In the present study the same criteria is considered

to determine the academic performance grades. The students who have scored 70%

and above are considered as high academic performers and 50% and below are

considered to be low academic performers.

Stress. Stress was a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in

life, work, school, and other reason why people are being stress. Stress occurs on

students nowadays. When they are over thinking during their quizzes and exams may
cause stress and can’t focus in answering it or it affects their mind in trying to remember

the answers on the problems.

Learning Ability. Learning Ability is known as mental ability. Research has shown

that cognitive skills are a determining factor of an individual’s learning ability. Cognitive

skills are mental skills that are used in the process of acquiring knowledge; according to

Oxfordlearning.com the skills that “separate the good learners from the so-so learners.”

Syndrome. Syndrome is a group of symptoms which consistently occur together,

or a condition characterized by a set of associated symptoms. Like a rare syndrome in

which the function of the brain is damaged.

Undermined. Undermined literally means to dig a hole underneath something;

making it likely to collapse. But we more often use the word to describe sabotage or the

act of weakening someone else’s efforts. Social undermining is the expression of

negative emotions directed towards a particular person or negative evaluations of the

person as a way to prevent the person from achieving their goals. This behaviour can

often be attributed to certain feelings, such as dislike or anger.

Framework of the study

The purpose of this study is to know what are the effects of stress on the

Academic Performance of Grade 12 students in Norala National High School .The

researchers have conceptualized the future study.
