“Khaas is a word which is intended for a specific meaning or for a
specific name as individual entities. Just as we would say when
specifying a person: Zaid, and when specifying a subcategory: a
man, and when specifying a category: a human.
Aam is every word which encompasses all individuals in plurality
(under that meaning), regardless of whether the word is plural in
its actual word-form e.g. Muslims/Idolaters, or whether it is plural
in terms of meaning e.g. who/which.
The hukm for a Khaas word (found) in the Qur’an is that acting
upon it is compulsory without room for choice. (In the scenario
that) a Khabr al-Wahid or Qiyas opposes it, but there is the
possibility of acting upon both without altering the hukm of the
Khaas word, then both will be acted upon. Otherwise, the (Khaas
word in the) Qur’an will be acted upon, and whatever opposes it
will be left (in terms of acting upon it).”
