Proper Waste Management – Introduction

The earth is not what it was before. It was transformed into something more advanced, more
diverse and much more complicated. People became so focused with satisfying their own needs and
wants, they forgot to consider those action’s effect on the life of the planet they’re living in.

According to the Asian Development Blog, the Philippines produced 35,000 tons of solid waste
every day. 35,000 tons that can fill roughly 1,200 trucks daily. These came from different households,
business organizations, construction sites and municipalities which varies from plastics and metal to glass,
paper, etc. Such solid wastes cause various environmental problems namely; flash floods, air, soil and
water pollution that later affects the biodiversity as well as harms the health of both humans and animals.

These effects are experienced by Filipinos, firsthand. In 2013, the Philippines was hit by typhoon
Yolanda, casualties recorded by Give2Asia.org indicates that over 6,000 Filipinos lost their lives and over
1 million homes were damaged. As anyone can see, this problem is too vital to ignore. Therefore, what
should be done?

The continuous surge of solid waste is impossible to stop as the rise of population, affluence and
technological advancements are inevitable. However, the plan is not to eradicate the use of solid waste
but rather, to develop a modern way of proper waste management that can lead to the betterment of the
society and its environment.

Proper Waste Management are the actions done to handle wastes; from the collection, transport
to the treatment and final disposal. As the discussion progress, different perspectives are going to be
examine, researches and journals are presented, and methods will be provided regarding on how to
manage solid waste even in the comfort of your own home. Doing waste management should start in the
smallest unit of the society as it will generate a domino effect, uniting all units of society saving not just
our own lives but also the life of the planet we’re living in.

The time has come to start concentrating on the issues that matters most. The environment had
been and is still providing the people’s needs, wants and more. Nonetheless, it’s the people’s behaviors
that led to the earth’s current situation thus, it’s only fair that they are also the ones who will act,
improving the welfare of the environment. The earth should not be taken for granted as we cannot live
without it.

For the second part of the contextualized analysis, we will present the Government’s views and
opinions regarding proper waste disposal.
