MAT 152 - Gapminder Analysis of Data

The gapminder.org website will be used to create analyses of data. The graphs will then be posted on the website
as part of the international project.

I. Home Page - Group Assignment

1. Go to www.gapminder.org .
2. Click on the tab at the top entitled Gapminder Tools. This will load a graph with circles on it.
3. As an individual – Click on your country and make other countries as transparent as you want by
dragging the slider left or right (below the country names). Make sure your country is clear.

4. Press PLAY and take note of major and minor changes in the data for your country. Note the year
of the most dramatic changes and also note how the income/life expectancy changed (positively
or negatively).
5. If the data are all jumbled together and it is difficult to see, click on the Magnifying glass in the

Zoom menu on the right. and click and drag

around the data set (like you would if you were cropping a picture). Then hit play again to see the
zoomed in video.
6. Open a new browser window and research your country to be able to describe the dramatic
changes. Create a brief statement about at least two things that affected income and life
expectancy in your country from 1800 to 2015. A good way to start this search is to find a
timeline of your country. (You may do this in a separate word doc in order to copy and paste later
to your website).
7. Choose one person in your group to create a graph for the Weebly website HOME page. As a
group, select the three countries for your group on the right of the chart. If you have trouble
seeing the country marker, you can click and drag the name of the country to anywhere on the
graph.
8. At the top of the graph, click on Full Screen. Make sure the graph has played to the year 2015 and
you can easily see the trails of each of the three countries.
9. Copy the group graph into Weebly. The easiest way to do this is using the Snipping Tool.

a. Click on the Windows button in the lower left corner of the screen
b. In the Search bar, type Snip
c. Click on the Snipping Tool
d. Click on the upper left corner of your graph and drag right to snip the entire graph
including the axes on the left, the geographic regions and country names on the right, the
Chart and Map tabs at the top and the years and Population Total at the bottom.
e. Choose File → Save As…
f. Save the image to your desktop as a jpg with the file name Gapminder graph.
g. Open an internet browser and go to your Weebly website.
h. On the Home page of your webiste, drag down an Image icon to the bottom of the page.
Click on the Image icon and click on Upload a photo from your computer. Find the picture
on your computer and Open it so that it appears in Weebly.
10. Drag and drop a Text icon below the picture of the graph. Now you will interpret the graph as a
group. First, you should reference the Gapminder.org website and briefly explain the axes of the
graph. Adding to this paragraph, each student should type in their statement from #6. Place a
button or link at the end of the paragraph to cite your data source. Also type your name at the
end of your interpretation.

II. Country Page - Individual Assignment

1. Select your individual country.
2. You will create a graph showing either a positive or a negative linear correlation.
3. Start by changing only the vertical axis to represent something that relates to your global issue.
Do this by clicking on Life Expectancy, years at the top of the vertical axis. Think about something
relating to your issue that may positively or negatively affect Income per Person. The horizontal
axis should remain on Income.
** It may take a while to find a good correlation. You want to be able to see a clear trend: As
Income/Person increases what happens to the dependent variable you chose?
4. Copy the resulting graph to your individual country page on Weebly. Make sure to copy the titled
axes of the graph. Interpret the graph by explaining the axes and the type of correlation that
exists along with how the correlation affects the axes.
5. Cite Gapminder.org below the graph using a link or button.
