1. What are the science concepts required to create a solution to this problem?
Some science concepts required to create a solution to this problem include drag and
Newton’s first law. The first scientific concept is drag; it is caused by air resistance, a
type of friction, which had to be slowed down to reduce the helmet’s speed or velocity
when falling. Another scientific concept is Newton’s first law: an object in motion stays
in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force. The helmet would come into contact
with an unbalanced force when it hit the ground; therefore, to prevent it from breaking
it requires cushioning. However when cushioning the helmet, it is important to be
careful of how much mass is added to it because more mass can increase the velocity of
the helmet during the freefall.

2.
Materials Required:
Prototype 1:
12 Scantrons
1.3 meters of tape
Design features- The scantrons were used
to reduce the drag and the tape helped hold
the papers together.
Drop 1:
Drop 2:
Cup
Straws(4)
Cotton Pads (2)
1 meter of tape
Sponge (less than before)
Box
For drop 2, materials have the same design
features and purpose as drop 1 but there
will be less of each material to reduce

weight and therefore velocity so the egg will not crack or concuss.
Our design did not work for drop 1, although the egg did not crack, it was concussed with the
5g and 15g indicator. We do not know if the design would have worked for drop 2.
7. Based on your tests, propose refinements to the design and construction of the problem
solution in the space below. Include pictures of your improved design.
Due to the fact our group only dropped once, our refinements would be the design for drop 2.
The egg was pretty well protected but it had too much weight causing it to concuss but less
weight should slow it down, reducing drag while remaining cushioned.
