3. Paragraphs 2.a. through e. define parallel runs up to 500

proportion to length as follows:
Sx = Sk × L/500
Where:
Sx = spacing to be used
Sk = spacing defined in paragraphs 2.a. through e.
L = length of parallel run in feet.
4. Spacing between different kinds of instrument systems is
not critical, except that 120 volt alarm, solenoid, and

per paragraphs 2.a. through e.
5. If cable trays are used, cables for different kinds of
instrument systems shall be physically grouped according
to type to minimize interference between systems.
6. Wiring systems shall normally be arranged in order of
noise source and sensitivity. For example: alarm cables
shall be instrument system nearest to any power wiring,
and thermocouple cables shall be located furthest from
power and alarm cables.
4.3.3 Wire Identification
1. Pairs of wires shall be identified by permanent wire
markers, such as preprinted heat shrinkable tubing wire
markers.

4.3.5 Miscellaneous
1. If a piece of equipment has alternate sensors (such as
multiple thermocouples), sensor signals shall be brought
to a junction box located on or near equipment to allow
convenient selection of alternate signals.
2. If wire is run next to fired heaters or other heat
radiating equipment (as is occasionally required with
thermocouples), every effort shall be made to keep wire in
areas where temperatures are not excessive. If this is not
practical, wire shall have moisture resistant, high
temperature insulation. As soon as wire is away from hot
area, a common junction box shall be provided for
connection to wire with PVC insulation, which shall be run
the remaining distance. If destination is within 75 feet,
high temperature wire shall be run continuously without
transition to PVC insulated wire. Other than the
requirement for high temperature insulation, lead wire
shall conform to Section 4.
3. Electronic transmitters or pressure to current converters
shall have terminals for (if instrument does not have
these terminals, an external terminal box shall be
provided):
a. Signal leads.
b. Connecting temporarily or permanently a 4-20 mA
output meter in series. A jumper shall be provided
across milliammeter terminals for use if a meter is
not used.
c. There shall be means to check calibration at the
field device whether via hand-held communicators or

4.4 Barrier Requirements for Process Connected Electrical Devices
1. Electrical devices connected to any process fluid except air,
water, steam, or lubricating oil shall have a suitable barrier
installed locally at device to prevent process fluid from entering
conduit system.
2. The following barriers are suitable:
a. Inherent barrier - This barrier is an internal barrier
inherent to manufacture of device. Construction of device is
such that failure of primary diaphragm or tube does not result
in transmission of fluids into electrical conduit system. This
is accomplished through factory potting or magnetic coupling.
Devices typical of this category are pressure transmitters,
solenoid operated valves, temperature transmitters, and
thermocouples.
b. MI cable barrier - This barrier is an external barrier
installed between electrical device and conduit system. Fluids

©TEXACO GENERAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
DEC 96 SIGNAL TRANSMISSION GEMS K-13D5

are inherently prevented from flowing through MI cable due to

construction of MI cable.
c. Double seal and vent - This type of barrier is an external
barrier installed between electrical device and conduit
system. This barrier is made by connecting electrical device
to conduit system through a seal fitting, tee fitting, and
second seal fitting. Tee fitting has a breather/drain fitting
installed. In event of a primary sensor leak, the first seal
limits the leak, drain relieves the leak, and second seal
blocks fluid from conduit system. This type of barrier shall
be used only for special cables that cannot be handled with MI
barriers.

9.2 Materials and Construction
1. Type of material, galvanized steel or aluminum, used in
construction of trays, tray connectors, covers, and cover
connectors shall be per project specifications.
2. Trays shall be ladder type, except in applications that have fire
protection installed around tray.
3. Fire protected trays shall be die stamped or expanded metal type.
Tray side rails shall have open channel turned inside with flat
surface on outside. This is necessary to provide sufficient backing
for blanket type fire protection. Trays shall be P-W Industries
Type “E” punched bottom ladder type tray or Purchaser approved
equal.
4. If signal tubing for emergency block and depressuring valves are
supported by tray, supporting tray and hardware shall have a
minimum temperature rating equal to tubing.
5. Trays 6 inches and wider shall as a minimum have 3 inch loading
depth. Side rails shall as a minimum be fabricated from 16 gage
thick metal sheets. Trays less than 6 inches wide may have 1 1/2
inch side channels.
6. Bolts, nuts, and other hardware shall be 300 series SS.
7. Load bearing capacity of trays shall not be less than 50 lb/linear
foot, with maximum midspan deflection of 1/2 inch if supported on
12 foot centers. Capacity shall conform to Section 9.1.2, paragraph
1.
9.3 Installation
9.3.1 General
Conduit, junction boxes, trays, cable, tubing, and strut shall
be mounted, supported, or clamped to be free of vibration and
misalignment.
9.3.2 Trays
1. Route chosen shall not expose tubing or wire to excessive
heat, vibration, or other conditions that may cause damage
to trays, tubing, or wire.
2. Trays or associated equipment shall not block walkways or
access to operating equipment.
3. Trays above walkways shall be at least 7 feet above floor
or walkway.
4. Trays immediately above ground shall be at an elevation
that does not interfere with road access of portable
equipment, such as trucks or cranes.

5. Trays shall be run along pipe racks or columns, with type

and number of supports dependent on distance between
columns or other existing supports. Sufficient hangers and
other type of supports shall be spaced along tray to
prevent excessive movement, sagging, or misalignment.
6. Trays shall be located to permit accessibility to top of
tray for maintenance or addition of instrument tubing and
multiconductor instrument leads.
7. Routes shall be chosen such that they are outside of
potentially hazardous areas where flash fires would cause
damage to tubing or wiring.
8. Cable tension shall be monitored by dynamometer unless
pulled by hand.
9. Tray shall be grounded by grounding jumpers. Grounding
shall be every 200 feet (minimum two places) to a ground
rod.
10. Tray system shall be mechanically continuous.
11. Transitions between trays, such as change in direction or
elevation, shall be made with manufacturer’s standard
transition pieces to ensure proper mechanical support for
tray contents.
