Teaching Philosophy

Becoming a teacher had been a long-term goal of mine since entering college. Being able
to help mold and educate a younger generation into better learners and lifelong scholars is a great
responsibility. This goal mixed with my passion for history makes me an ideal teacher. History
has always fascinated me, and after taking extensive classes in the field I feel that I have a lot to
offer my future students. I realized I wanted to be a history teacher after my first college history
course. In this course I learned so much more than just dates and names. I was told the stories
behind the dates a names, and just how much history impacts our lives today. I found myself
constantly talking to my family and friends about the things I was learning in history class. For a
while I did not notice how frequently I was talking about history, and when I finally caught
myself my career choice seemed obvious. I would mesh my enthusiasm for teaching and passion
for history to become the best history teacher I could possibly be.
As a history teacher I do my best to make history interesting. I always try to get all of my
students interested in history. I do this through using meaningful primary sources, the utilization
of technology, and limiting extensive textbook readings. However, I realize that history is not
interesting to some, especially teenagers. To address this, not only do I try to facilitate a passion
for history in my students but, also teach them valuable skills they can transfer between any
subject. History requires a lot of reading. In order for historians and history majors to get through
large amounts of readings, several tactics are deployed by people in the field. However, the
specific tactics I will show my students are going to help them in all their classes throughout
their academic careers. These tactics are, reading from the outside in, and scanning chapters.
Reading from the outside in helps my students get a better understanding of any book they read
before they even open it. While scanning helps them manage any large readings they are
assigned in any class. Scanning will show them where to look for important information in a
reading, and how to chunk an overwhelming reading into a manageable one. Overall, I want to
instill an interest for history into my students, but even more than that I want to prepare them for
success in all of their classes and their secondary education.
Throughout university I learned many methods for teaching. There are countless methods
to teach effectively and efficiently. In my class the methods I use the most are structured
academic controversies and teaching disciplinary skills. Structured academic controversies
facilitate critical thinking in my class, and it helps my students develop the skill of debating a
topic with evidence to back their opinion. It also teaches students how to respectfully disagree
with someone. A valuable skill for their academic and personal lives. I will also teach my
students disciplinary skills. I do this mainly through the primary sources I have them analyze and
write about. Both of these methods facilitate effective teaching and learning in my classroom.
Helping to mold and educate a younger generation in a subject I am passionate about is a great
honor and responsibility. Which is why I always do my best to help my students succeed not
only in my class, but to set them up for success throughout their academic careers.
