Questions

1. Which, if any, of the substances had resonances structures? How many

resonance structures did each substance have?

Answer:
The substances that have resonances are:

Substances’ Name Amount of the resonance structure

CHO2- 2

CO2 3

(NO2)- 2

SO2 2

2. Both chlorine and fluorine are represented by a green modelling piece that has
4 holes. Is using the same piece for two different atoms acceptable? Why or
why not?

Answer:
Using the same piece for two different atoms is acceptable when both of the
atoms have the same number of valence electron. For example, chlorine and
fluorine represented by green color in the modeling piece and have 4 holes.
Both chorine and fluorine are in the same period on the periodic table, which
is 7th period. Since they are in the same period so they also have the same
number of valence electron. Therefore, chorine and fluorine can be represented
with same modelling piece.

3. Explain why only the lone pairs on the central atom are taken into
considerations when predicting molecular shape. What substances from the lab
activity have more than one atom?

Answer:
- The lone pairs on the central atom is used to determine the molecular shape
because the lone pairs play important role in affecting the shape of the bond.
Also, the electron in the lone pairs will refuse/repel others electron around
them.
- According to lab activity, the substances that have more than one central
atoms are H202, CH3NH2, CH3OH, and C2H4.
