If there is a single trait that most distinguishes entrepreneurs, it is the: they have an uncanny
ability to anticipate and supply what large numbers of people want. 2For example, here’s how Akio
Morita, the legendary founder of Sony, got his idea for the Sony Walkman. 3He would go to the beach
with his children, and the kids and their friends would listen to high-volume ghetto blasters from
morning to evening. 4Morita asked himself, “Why should I have to listen to this ghastly music?” 5And he
wondered, “Why should they carry those cumbersome machines?” 6Morita told his engineers to figure
out a way to build a small radio and cassette player that would sound like a high-quality car stereo and
yet could be attached to a person’s head. 7They obliged, and the Sony Walkman stormed the market.

B.
Advertisers have many clever ways to get the consumer’s attention. 2First, to make the product
1

memorable, they can link it with an interesting character. 3When people see the character, they instantly
remember the product. 4For example, any child will recognize Ronald McDonald, the Energizer Bunny,
or the Green Giant. 5Also, the Pillsbury Dough Boy. 6Furthermore, free samples help consumers become
familiar with the item. 7Sometimes, when people are walking downtown, somebody gives you a snack or
a perfume sample. 8Who can resist getting something for nothing? 9Another smart advertising method is
to place products in popular television shows and movies. 10On American Idol, for instance, the judges
promote certain soft drinks. 11In reality shows such as Survivor, the contestants win particular car
models, and millions of people hear about the car’s features. 12The best marketing strategy is somewhat
devious, though. 13Many companies, especially in the high-tech field, offer mail-in rebates. 14Consumers
are lured by the possibility of a large discount. 15For instance, I bought anti-virus software for my
computer because there was a $40 rebate, but the method of getting the rebate was time-consuming. 16I
had to photocopy my receipt, fill out a form, and mail it. 17Apparently, large numbers of consumers
simply forget to mail the rebate form in, so they never actually receive the discount. 18Every year,
advertisers come up with better and more innovative marketing ideas.

6. How many clever ways of getting the costumers’ attention were given in the above paragraph?
A. 3
B. 4
C. 5
D. 6

7. What propaganda device is illustrated in sentences 9, 10 and 11?

A. Appeal to Authority
B. Glittering Generalities
C. Prestige Identification
D. Transfer of Authority

8. Which of the following sentences is NOT a statement of generalization?

A. Any child will recognize Ronald McDonald, the Energizer Bunny, or the Green Giant.
B. Free samples given to consumers help them in becoming familiar with the product.
C. Many companies, especially in the high-tech field, offer mail-in rebates as a marketing strategy.
D. Numerous consumers simply forget to mail the rebate form in, never receiving any discount.

9. What kind of statement is sentence 12?

A. Fact
B. Generalization
C. Opinion
D. Propaganda

1

3
The Southeastern Development Association recently released a report that said the estimated 20 million
waterbeds in the U.S. are incredible energy wasters. 4Electric waterbed heaters sometimes run eight hours a day
and use as much electricity as a large refrigerator. 5Leaving the bed unmade every day can increase energy
consumption by about 32 percent through heat loss.

TEST II. EVALUATING INFERENCES

Read the editorial article from the May 1, 2017, issue of The Philippine Star below and evaluate
the inferences that follow. In the space provided before every number, write A for accurate inferences
and I for inaccurate inferences and inferences with insufficient evidence.

When President Duterte addresses organized labor today, he is expected to unveil a package of benefits
including some financial boost, according to administration officials.

Workers appreciate any augmentation of their income. This, however, must be balanced with the ability of
employers to pay. Productivity tends to increase when workers are happy with their compensation, and employers
who want their businesses to thrive understand this. But there are limits to what businesses can afford, which
cannot be ignored while considering the welfare of workers.

As important as decent compensation for workers is creating an environment that is conducive to job
generation. This task of government becomes more challenging in a country that has steadily slipped in
competitiveness against many of its neighbors.

Among the basic requirements for an investment-friendly environment are safety, ease in doing business,
the rule of law and adequate infrastructure. In all elements, the country is wanting.

The weak rule of law calls for determined action not only on the part of the executive but more so from the
judiciary. Some red tape has been cut since President Duterte assumed power and issued marching orders to
simplify procedures for transacting with government. But he has to do more, especially in getting local government
units to streamline procedures and comply with his order.

Red tape is one of the hindrances to infrastructure development. Another is the security threat posed by the
communist New People’s Army, the Abu Sayyaf and other armed groups. On Saturday as the President hosted the
ASEAN summit in Manila, the NPA attacked the Lapanday Foods Corp. right in his turf, Davao City, torching trucks
and seizing the guns of security guards. The NPA has also burned buses, office facilities and telecommunications
towers in extorting “revolutionary taxes” from the private sector, becoming one of the biggest hindrances to
investment, job generation and development efforts in the countryside.
