Production Reflection and Self Assessment Essay

My name is Andrea Aguado and for Nueva’s 2019 fall production, I worked in the
marketing pod. I was required to hang posters around campus, promote the show, help with
poster designs, use social media as our main platform, etc for the Laramie Project. First I began
by thinking of words that describe the play and what is incorporated in the real life situation in
order to create the mood and theme of the poster. As a small group, we looked for poster
design ideas on Pinterest based on other production’s posters and art. Second was creating the
poster itself and giving feedback to as what we liked or didn’t. As the final poster was finished
and printed, I was sent to put up the posters around campus to promote the show, in order to
capture the public eye. My main job was in the social media platform. I along with a group of
classmates set up a website not just for the core but to provide more information about the
actual Matthew Shepard Foundation, what happens behind the scenes to create the play, etc.
Moreover, I was also told to look up information to hang up in the theater’s lobby. The board
was set up and I helped with ideas that could be used to decorate it. I would go to the lobby to
see if any help was needed and thus I began to help by painting letters for a sign. Finally, I was
required to come help and attend the shows, where I collected tickets and assisted in the
intermission.
During the production, there wasn’t a lot of challenges I faced with work or my
academics. The only thing I struggled with was keeping my grades up in other classes as senior
has been very busy with scholarships, applications, essays, etc. I was able to, but not
completely, handle this challenge by taking advantage of my free time to complete suck tasks. I
had a couple confrontations in my own personal life but I knew that I had to put myself first in
order to come back to work. Luckily, I had friends to accompany and comfort me when I most
needed them.
Throughout the production unit, I would say I have grown more into becoming more
comfortable working in a group yet also working independently. An example of this is when I
was working on the website for social media marketing. I was assigned my own part and while
some offered help, I would’ve rather worked by myself because I had already had my own ideas
and words to incorporate.
Transferable skills I’ve acquired through the process are working independently and as a
group, marketing through social media, etc. I developed these skills throughout the process of
the show and our work. Such skills will transfer in a way where I’ll be able to work both
independently and in a group for any kind of job I acquire in the near future, that involves
collaboration or working on my own.
During the process, my main objectives were to fulfill my responsibilities by always being
on task, working at all times, taking breaks only if needed, etc. I was mostly productive during
every class period, though I would get back on task easily, there were a few times where I
would get distracted by friends of mine. I was able to collaborate within the lobby team as well
as marketing. I have been trying to improve my communication skills and within this production,
I felt like I was able to talk more with people.
I would say I would but wouldn’t be given a raise/promotion because although I had
been working and trying to finish my responsibilities on time, I was also off task and wondering
on what to do. Comparing my work ethic to others within my pod, I would say that I was almost
always on task doing what I had to, while others were either on their phone at some points or
working equally as me on another project. This experience sparked me into the new interest of
working in the marketing industry especially on social media. I discovered marketing a show
takes collaboration and preparation to make something great in order to catch the public’s eye. I
learned how to promote, market a show, and work under time/pressure with a group of people.
Overall, my production experience was good; being able to market and watch the show. This
experience shapes my decisions in a way where I would want to have a more productive
mindset, if I were to be in the marketing pod again in the next production.
