Topic: Every generation of people is different in important ways.

How is your generation

different from your parents’ generation? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your
answer.

Man, through the ages, has undergone many changes from the time he depicted a herd of
mammoths on the walls of his cave to these days when he can use personal computers to create a
new pattern for his carpet, send e-mails to his friend and even make a cup of coffee without leaving
his chair. There is no doubt that every generation is different in many ways from the preceding ones.
In the following paragraphs, I will list some differences which I believe exist between my generation
and my parents' generation.

First of all, I think that my generation is more familiar with modern technology than my parents'
generation. For example, my mother learned from me about the Internet. I was the first person to
explain to my parents what the Internet is and how to use it.

Secondly, people of my generation have different interests and different opinions about many
things. For example, my parents and I have different views about the decision made by the
government. My mother thinks that more money should be spent on books and libraries for the
children, and I think that more money should be spent on computer technologies.

Finally, I think that people of my generation tend to forget many traditions and customs of the
country they were born in. We often forget about the meaning of the holidays our parents
celebrate. I cannot say that it is wrong I just think it is normal when recent historical events are
celebrated with more enthusiasm. However, I believe that all people should remember their history
and pass it down to the next generation because this knowledge is irreplaceable and.

To sum up, there is no doubt that the next generation is always better prepared for the future than
the old one, and this means that our children will also be more experienced than we are now.

Every generation is different from the previous one, and some of these differences are very
important. Indeed, the rapid development of modern technology means that the differences
between my parents’ generation and my own are particularly noticeable. The widespread use of the
internet, easy communication and financial stability are few of the major factors that have caused
great differences between our generations.

A huge difference is the modes of communication that we are comfortable and familiar with.
Amongst my peer group, if we wish to talk to a friend, we would just text him or call him up using
our cell phones. If that fails, there is always email or social media platforms that we can use to try
and track him down. It is very simple for us; it is just second nature. But in my parents’ generation,
communication was difficult and expensive. Nobody owned a cell phone and the public phones were
used to deliver only urgent messages. Unlike us, they had very limited modes of communication. If
our friend has moved to some other city, (or even another country), then we may stay in contact
with him through whichever method of communication is most convenient for us both. But our
parents’ generation had to write letters which took days to get delivered.

Another important difference is the lifestyle and cultural background. Our parents’ generation was
never given as much freedom to shape their personal lives as is given to our generation. The parents
were responsible for taking all major life decisions relating to education, career or marriage. Children
in my parents’ generation would never dare to go against the wishes of their parents. But my peers
and I are free to make decisions about our own lives. Our parents are kind enough to grant us these
liberties.

Finally, financial security is also an important difference. My parents grew up in the immediate post-
independence era, and at that time most of the families were very poor. My parents had to work
part time while managing their studies to support their family. In contrast, I don’t even have to
worry about paying my fees. Our generation is not subjected to the hardships they went through
and we are living a much more comfortable life.

There are many other differences, between my generation and the preceding one, but in my view
the above mentioned are the most important points of difference.
