Statement of Purpose

I am Shehnaz Anjum from, Gilgit Baltistan.” Balance” is always the main key word I use to describe
myself. I am a person who desires to have equal proportion in everything. I am strong and courageous in
adversity, and humble and grateful in success. The village to which I belong is extremely backward in
terms of access to quality of life, healthcare and resources for personal and academic growth. However,
my individual endeavors to make myself a” balanced institute” and to make best out of worst is evident
from the fact that I am a student of one of the best institutes in Pakistan.

Things which fascinate me more are community services, which is evident from the fact that
whenever I go back to my village I teach the students of the school where I once used to take my
schooling. Serving the humanity and helping the oppressed and deprived ones give me immense
pleasure. I love sports too and play badminton, and twice I have made to badminton finals at my college
level. Moreover, I own a good sense of arts and love sketching. I have also won award in a recent
cultural exhibition at my college level, in which I presented the culture of Gilgit.

By nature I am adaptable, flexible and respectful of ideas and attitudes that differ from mine. I love
to do the activities which demand commitment and responsibilities. New environments as well as new
rivals make me struggle and learn more than the unchanging, constant and repeating surroundings. The
quality that I like most about myself is my passion for a “balanced life” and I am of the belief that excess
of everything is detrimental. I am practical in my actions and pure in my intentions.

It is said “beauty lies in the eyes of beholder” so if one is deprived of his/her vision how will he/she
appreciate the beauty around. Blindness in the society is the most distressing thing I have ever seen in
the environment and is the prime reason for choosing Optometry. I have deep sense of care for these
people and want to serve humanity by helping them improve their vision. To gain best ever and get
acquainted with the modern skills in this field is my academic goal.

I have always been dreaming to study overseas, especially in the United States. I believe by having
the opportunity to study there, on one hand, I could gain new experiences and skills that would be very
useful through the process to achieve my goal and to contribute to my country. I will also learn and
interact more with international communities, and experience cultural diversities. On the other hand I
will add to the diverse culture of America as I belong to a very diverse culture and tradition in the world,
Gilgit Baltistan. My aim is” to learn and contribute”, my message is “humanity and tolerance”, and
“diversity” is my gift to the students of United States.
