Reader Final Assessment Summary

Reader: Fayshaun
Grade: 3rd
Tutor: Madison Cline
Date: 12-4-19

Quantitative Summary:

In one of our last tutoring sessions together, I assessed Fayshaun at a grade-level text. This ended
up being a level 23. When reviewing the data, it showed that the level 23 was an independent
text level. Fayshaun scored 95% accuracy and had a score of 12 out of 12 for comprehension.
While reading, he had 11 errors and 2 self-corrections, for a self-correction rate of 1:7. His
WCPM for this text was 57 words.

Qualitative Summary:

During this level of text Fayshaun had some errors, most of these errors were omissions. While
he was reading I noticed that when it was a word he didn’t know or was unsure of he would skip
it. I noticed that he would hesitate first, looking at the word trying to decode it but he ended up
just omitting the word. However, some errors were because he would say a different word
instead of what was written. These substitutions of words still made sense and flowed within the
sentence so it wasn’t as easy for him to catch.

Similar to the first assessment I did with Fayshaun his fluency was a 3 out of 4 on the Scale for
Assessing Fluency. The reason he is a three is that he reads at a good rate, he has good phrasing,
and he is able to read using expressions. While he was reading, Fayshaun would pause when
there was punctuation, but he would occasionally pause when there wasn’t and it would affect
how he read the rest of the sentence.

When asked to retell the text, Fayshaun scored 12 out of 12, which put him at an independent
level. While doing the retell he was able to tell me the location, appearance, how they eat, the
movement and the dangers to giraffes. When he was retelling me he did not mention any dangers
to giraffes, but I simply prompted, “Did the giraffes have any danger?” He was able to answer
yes and explain the two main dangers they had. I was very impressed with his ability to retell
important information. Fayshaun seemed to have some trouble during the text, so I was unsure of
how much he comprehended, however, he did great!

Reader Summary:

Overall, Fayshaun did not seem to be motivated when he found out what we were doing and
what he had to read. During our tutoring sessions, he was more motivated to read the digital texts
so I had a feeling he would be hesitant to read the assessment book. When reading the text he got
about halfway through and started to slow down a bit in his reading, I could tell he was getting a
little frustrated, not because it was too challenging but he didn’t want to read anymore. I
encouraged him to keep going and that he was doing great. He picked back up to the speed he
was going. After a few more sentences he stopped, looked at me and sighed. I again encouraged
him, told him he was almost done and said he was doing great to keep it up. He finished strong
but appeared very glad to be done.

With the first assessment, we did at the beginning of our time together Fayshaun’s instructional
text was a level 20. He made substantial growth throughout our time together. I felt that
Fayshaun grew in his vocabulary during our time together. I found this to be true while he was
reading our assessment text because after he was done answering questions he was explaining to
me a word we talked about in one of our prior lessons that appeared in the text.

Since the first assessment, Fayshaun has become more confident in his reading skills. He has
grown in text level as well as vocabulary and was normally pretty eager to learn, some days were
better than others. I felt Fayshaun felt more comfortable asking questions about what he was
reading as well as wanted to learn more about different topics. I felt that he grew in his
comprehension as well. He was able to read and understand what he was reading better at the end
of our time together. I am very impressed with Fayshaun’s improvements and am very glad I got
to see him grow through our time together.
