3E – Prime Power for Stationary Emergency
Application
Main usage:
Used when utility / grid fails in applications where safety or commercial
losses due to utility failure or local legislation requires standby installation.
Customer expectation:
Highest available power rating & load factor
Overload capability for transient governing purposes
“Prime Power” wording due to individual design philosophy
Operation mode:
Automatic mains failure operation (Island)
Automatic mains failure operation (Island parallel)
Automatic mains failure operation (Island with change over synchronization)

3F – Data Center Continuous Power
Application
Main usage:
Used in data centers as emergency standby units (in case of grid / utility
failure). Data center continuous power is necessary if Uptime Institute Tier III
and Tier IV compliance is requested.
Customer expectation:
Availability - otherwise extremly high financial losses
Operation mode:
Automatic mains failure operation (Island)
Automatic mains failure operation (Island parallel)
Automatic mains failure operation (Island with change over synchronization)

3F – Data Center Continuous Power
Uptime Institute Tier requirements summary
Distribution paths – electrical power backbone 1 1 1 active and 1 alternate 2 simultaneously active
Compartmentalization No No No Yes
Important notes:
The Data Centre Continuous Power Rating is only necessary for data centres that are completely (for each and every capacity component)
designed to Uptime Institute Tier III & IV requirements. In other cases Prime Power or Standby Power rating will be sufficient.
The on-site power production system is the source of electrical power for site availability and reliability. The number or lack of grid paths does
not affect the Tier classification. The purchase of power from the local grid is an economic alternative for the data center operator.
