3E – Prime Power for Stationary Emergency
Application

Definition as per MTU

Prime Power for Stationary Emergency provides classical standby power comparable to the application group Standby
Power (3D). The difference is that this application group offers a 10% overload capability to cover for e.g. voltage
variations or peak loads.

3F – Data Center Continuous Power
Definition

Definition as per ISO 8528-1 (DCP)

Data Center Power is defined as being the maximum power which a generating set is capable of delivering while
supplying a variable or continuous electrical load and during an unlimited run hour. Depending on the sites to
supply and the availability of reliable utility, the generating set manufacturer is responsible to define what power
level he is able to supply to fulfil that requirement including hardware or software or maintenance plan adaptation.

3F – Data Center Continuous Power
Application

Main usage:
Used in data centers as emergency standby units (in case of grid / utility
failure). Data center continuous power is necessary if Uptime Institute Tier III
and Tier IV compliance is requested.

Expected operation hours:

< 500 hours per year

Customer expectation:
 Availability - otherwise extremly high financial losses

Operation mode:
 Automatic mains failure operation (Island)
 Automatic mains failure operation (Island parallel)
 Automatic mains failure operation (Island with change over synchronization)

Concurrently Maintainable No No Yes Yes

Fault Tolerance No No No Yes

Compartmentalization No No No Yes

Continuous Cooling No No No Yes

Important notes:
The Data Centre Continuous Power Rating is only necessary for data centres that are completely (for each and every capacity component)
designed to Uptime Institute Tier III & IV requirements. In other cases Prime Power or Standby Power rating will be sufficient.
The on-site power production system is the source of electrical power for site availability and reliability. The number or lack of grid paths does
not affect the Tier classification. The purchase of power from the local grid is an economic alternative for the data center operator.
